hERE YOU GO
for video
Amazon.com: Cables Unlimited AUD-2350 VGA to S-Video or RCA Adapter: Electronics
for audio

The only problem with the cable in the post above is that VGA does not send out an audio signal so not sure as to why they put the red and white RCA's on there.
I have used the cable I posted on my STV before so I can confirm it works with the 4870's not sure about 5870's/260's/280's. -
hmm Mkelliny, i have the exact vga to svideo, and I also have the cable to connect to the tv from the svideo out. But when I connect it to my tv/m17x i get a flickering screen of my desktop in black and white....
What coudl the problem be.. -
bumping please help

It might be that the 260's don't support it. As I have never had that issue(well the flickering I had but I just wiggled it and it went away but it showed up in color. Sorry I can't be of more help.

hmm so m17x is sux when it comes to this i guess

make sure your laptop is at a low enough resolution to support the svideo out. this usually means 800x600 territory. I am assumming that this is a standard CRT TV and not a LED flatscreen. Also be aware that converting all these signals around are a black art and some combinations simply wont work. My DVD player wont even connect on svideo
And are you dual screening (laptop and TV have the same desktop)? -
You'll have a lot of trouble finding any recent laptop that will support composite or S-Video output. It's even getting hard to find desktop graphics cards that have any analog connectors - most make you use a DVI-to-VGA dongle if you want to hook up a VGA monitor.
It might be time to start looking at a new TV. I don't know about where you live, but here in NZ the price of a 1080p LCD TV is around 1/3 of what I paid for my M17x. -
Paid 500 euros for my 1080p LG HDTV in contrast to the 3000 euros for the laptop (last year)

A CRT will have one of the following resolutions:
* Standard-definition television (SDTV):
480i (NTSC uses an analog system of 486i split into two interlaced fields of 243 lines)
576i (PAL, 720×576 split into two interlaced fields of 288 lines)
* Enhanced-definition television (EDTV):
480p (720×480 progressive scan)
576p (720×576 progressive scan)
It appears the OP is trying to push an elephant (M17x resolution) through a straw (TV) & blaming the elephant because it will not fit. -

Composite? OMG I have not used that since the last time I hooked up a Nintendo. Heck thats about the time I still used the Coaxial Y splitter to hook up my Nintendo still.
Composite is SD only and do not forget you need to have the video card support TV-OUT to support it that way. Its not a direct adaptation from VGA. Same goes for S-Video, your card must support TV-OUT and yours does not!
The only video cards that support TV out are quite rare and not really produced anymore, and they almost always come with the VGA --> Composite adapter.
Meaning if your computer didnt come with it, it wont support it.
You have to invest in a CONVERTER if you want to use the Composite or S-Video from VGA Not an ADAPTER.
Monoprice has the cheapest and best ones on the net. I used a VGA --> Composite for my HTPC for a while before we got a new TV in the kids room.

yea dual screen

What nzgeek says is correct. The short answer is you cannot adapt the VGA output of your Alienware to a television via RCA. The problem lies in the signal output that your TV will be capable of accepting over RCA is 640x480 interlaced. PCs (not just the Alienware but -any- modern computer) will generally only output at a minimum of 640x480 progressive. Some older video cards have an optional s-video or rca output, but these were dropped a -long- time ago since any HDTV is capable of taking a much better signal.
If the only input on your TV is RCA (and presumably co-ax) then your TV is -way- out of date. You can't even watch television on a TV like that since 2009 without special equipment, so I wouldn't really consider this a failing of the Alienware.
It is technically possible to make this work by basically hacking your video driver, but even when s-video and RCA ports were the norm the picture quality was so low you could barely even read onscreen text. It was okay for some games and video playback, but virtually useless as a computer monitor.
Is RCA the only input on your TV or is it just the input you were trying to use? What is the make and model of your television?
EDIT: lol, like 5 people posted basically the same thing in the time it took me to write my post.
