I had a fairly long weekend of COD2 playing online. My new m17X handled it without a hitch. Only hear the fans kick up every so often. I know this game is not as intense as newer ones, but been playing on the same servers on COD2 for YEARS. I am now going to order a cooler. I know the Cyro seems to be the cooler of choice and makes sense because the fans are in the mack where the intakes are on the m17x. Just out of curiosity anyone used or using a "Cooler Master Storm SF 19 17" with the m17x?

Have a look also at Cooler Master Notepal U3. That's what i'm using. And i'm really pleased ;)

It's a modular design wich allow you to position the 3 80x80x10 fans wherever you want

Just ordered one of these as well since its pretty cheap!

Big thing is though make sure if you get an active cooler that all your fans are spinning the same way... don't pull are from something thats trying to pull it!

I know that to an extent its bad to not like the fans blow on their own. This is mostly because that your bearing can go out. However, most of the time you kill them is if your using compressed air and making your fans spin (but lets face it... its a lot of fun to be a kid and do that lol)

Excellent, thank you! I will look at this option as well.

Not issue powering all three fans from one USB port on the laptop? Could get a powered USB hub thought I guess.

Your USB ports have power sharing capability (on by default in BIOS).
The U3 fans are smaller and yes they can run out of USB (5V per port).

Does that thing have an option to run the fans with A/C power? I have tried dozens of laptop coolers (my wife hates me), and none of them that were USB powered did much of anything. They moved a little bit of air, which is better than nothing at all. I finally made my own out of three 120mm fans that run off a wall outlet.

    lol thats beastly!

Moving air is the only thing you can do... and sometimes you just can't get better. If your bottom of the case is cool you may have exceeded the effectiveness of coolers :p

That being said, the USB port really doesn't offer a ton of people to get the "hard core" cooling that some people want, however, I really think you should be ok with what you got :p

The NZXT has its own power cord, also its three 120mm fans can be replaced by fans of your choice(like the ones in your pic) see attached.

the fans really don't help much, but getting the back end off the table is what helps with temps.

I agree that raising the back a bit is what REALLY helps, but the coolers which push/pull correctly do help (I notice a ~2-5C drop with the fans running compared to when just sitting on the cooler).

But a side benefit (I have noticed) is that the grills on the cooler fans collect all the dust and keeps my notebook fans/grills/heatsinks pretty much dust free.

I just have to clean my notebook cooler every so often and give the notebook a quick wipe down. (instead of having to disassemble and blow a ton of canned air to clean the notebook itself out)

I think people have forgotten how inadequate the cooling in the M17 was, so not as much praise is given to how efficient the cooling on the M17x is. A couple of bottle caps do lower the temps pretty significantly. The three 120s do double that figure though. No overclock with a couple of bottlecaps (or whatever you use) will do the trick nicely. I've run a pretty heavy overclock daily, so I need all the help I can get.

@Katalin: I like that A LOT. What NZXT model is that exactly? The one I found says it houses only two 120s. Beats the hell out my industrial-looking Home Depot cooler. :)

So in conclusion, if one is to buy a cooler for her R3, should she buy one that blows air upwards into the computer, or sucks air downwards from the computer? Up, right? Just wanted to make sure. (I use her, because it's "sexist" to use him, says various college professors (hippie woman professors) of mine when I was in school lolz).

It sucks up from the bottom and blows out of the back.

I was asking about the cooler. I know that most coolers blow upwards AT the computer. That's what I should be looking for, right?

Both of these are good coolers.
The U3 is cheap and works great.
The Coolermaster has great grip, fancy lighting (if you are into that) and usb 3.0 ports

Depending on how much you are willing to spend is really the only concern between the 2 as both will work great.

My Zalman does OK once I replaced the fans with some higher quality ones, but have been tempted for a while to get the coolermaster

It's the NZXT Cryo LX for 17" laptops(fits the m17x perfectly) i know it's more expensive then the U3 but at least it's not like this:

Not really replaced by fans of your choice, There was a Cyro modding thread on OCN where someone stuck 2 low RPM slipstreams in.. It made the soldering smoke like crazy.

I think if you bought a better power adapter, fan controller, and fans (Which would cost as much as the Cyro itself) then you'd be good.

I made a steel/aluminum watercooling case a while back and I'm getting that "modding itch" again.. I'm personally going to be making my own and going at it from there.. Its most likely going to cost $100+ but I don't really care, All the coolers out now have crap fans or can't support better fans.

That's why i said of your choice and not whatever fans..Ordinary Joe would put 220V fans inside and of course the small wires will melt...
    That's common sense!

How much do you think it would cost to build my own cooler? Couple of bucks for fans, but what else do I need to make it work? Note: I don't want to make that one that has the desktop powersupply attached to it hehehe.
