There's a guy, apparently well known here, who's selling the copper shims and I heard that the 6970M doesn't make all that great contact with the GPU heatsink in the R2. I was wondering if using a copper shim would help with that? :)

Obviously it means looking into thicker thermal pads for the memory, probably like 1.5mm pads if they exist, but would that work?

    No one? :(

Was just wondering if this would help temps enough so I could overclock a bit more... :( Tired of being undervolted and all that...

being undervolted I think helps so that you don't trip your PSU as well, not just temps ;)

Nevermind... god forbid I get an answer to something that's somewhat important here... it's not like I'm running a GPU that's not supported officially and yet no one else is against throwing out an opinion to help out to those who are doing so... >_>

    /sarcasm

    Hi imglidinhere,

Unfortunately I can't speak to the shims, however it is a good point to determine if you are restricted in overclocking by the temps or the voltage. My temps using the standard heat sink and thermal pads and paste are never an issue...however if I try to over-clock my GPUs to much, them the voltage becomes the issue and either throttles the CPU or trips the PSU causing the laptop to shutdown.

That being said, if you were to use a modified power supply, and the voltage issue was no longer an issue, I definitely could understand the need for some better cooling suggestions.

So will be interested to hear if anyone else has thoughts on the shims or any other suggestions. I know DR650 does a lot of over-clocking, so he may possibly know the answer to this (or may have other suggestions). Might be worth posting the question in the over-clockers thread as well (if you haven't already), since those are the guys that like to put the systems to the extremes and therefore are looking for the best cooling solutions possible.

    Good luck to you!
