Hi All,
Received my ALW17 couple weeks ago.
Just wondering. Having watched many unboxings etc., on YouTube, I noticed all have a power supply plug that has a nifty ring of light near the end of the plug where it goes into the computer. Mine has nothing.
Is this to tell the charging status?
So those of us with the 180 watt supply have no way to see charge status? Kinda disappointed if that's the case.
Here's my machine purchased from Amazon...( Alienware ALW17-4681sLV 17-Inch Gaming Laptop ).
Is this supply OK for my Alien? Should I have received the 240 supply in the box?
(I've yet to call Alienware on this).
Have to add...
This was machine #2 from Amazon. First unit arrived with a dead-pixel issue. (This is the first thing I check for when I get a new device with a display).
Amazon promptly sent out a new replacement and #2 was perfect.
But I did notice that first unit was having the "can't charge, incorrect charger, etc.", problem. This was also a 180 watt supply. So far, with the new unit, I've yet to have that issue. But still I wonder about the 180 supply. Thoughts?
Thanks

I know it is not answer to your question but why did you bought Alienware from Amazon and not from Dell directly ?

The 180W charger does not have a blue LED, nor the 330W one, only the 240W. The wattage depends on the configuration, what's the model of your graphics card and processor?
GamerPC likes this. -
Dont know the 180, but the 330 has a led on the supply as the 240 has it on the plug.
The led on the supply does the same job as the led on the plug.
It shows that the supply has power from wall and wants to give it to your computer, not that its connected to the computer.
You now have to trust your computer feedback since there is no led. It will tell you if it doesnt charge or is not connected.
Btw that is also the first way i see the same regardless of supply-type. -

Kind of thought where this was going. So for the components, the 180 is OK? -
I saw that dim green led on the brick and I get what that does.
I thought that ring of light on the 240's plug indicated status; orange=charging, blue=fully charged etc.
That would be nice to just glance over to the Alien (closed and unused) and know it's charged state.
But if all that light does is show it has power, then I feel better about this minor nit.
I have an old $400 lappy that gives charge-feedback with the display closed, via a visible led.
Not a big deal, but I would have expected something similar from the lovable Alien. -
Doesn't the color of the alienhead change based on the charge status? Mine is orange when charging, fully charged is blue.

There should be at least two alienheads showing if it charges, runs on battery or power. (at least on my r2 -
The BIG question is why? why only the 17 power supply has it? Makes no sense. -
As for Dell shopping, since I got my 18 thru them, I have to say, they're not doing AW a service by having regular unskilled people working the phone lines to answer questions for pre-sales.. I called in and talked to what sounded like a valley girl dingbat that didn't know the answer to a single question I had about the 18... I'd think that it wouldn't be that hard to find actual gamers who own AW computers to work part time jobs in this position.... why go to the girl who likely was a greeter at Cheese Cake Factory before she came to the sale dept for $4K+ Laptops? -

Some have it and some don't, I have seen some of both in the ones I used for mods.
Correct Power Supply?
