I'm curious how many of you have received brand new laptops with dings scratches, and or any other cosmetic defects?

I got my computer the other day and its got a ding on the side of it and a scratch on the bottom. I'm one of those types that just can't put up with that after paying a good chunk of money for the laptop. I mean would you except a Ferrari with a paint chip in it?

Other then that its been freaking awesome. Pictures really don't do it justice seeing it in person is quite a different experience. Here is to hoping the replacement will be the way it should be.

I read somewhere on here that theirs a possibility Dell is sending out returned units? Is there any validity to that? It would be quite ridiculous of they were doing that.

If I could get a ferrari half off with a few dings and paint chips, I'd do it! (still couldn't afford it really tho) :)

If you bought it new, I'd return it and get it replaced... that's ridiculous!

I would be careful before exchanging it for minor cosmetic reasons if you are satisfied with it otherwise. My first R3 was perfectly acceptable except that the battery release was jammed, so I couldn't get inside to clean, replace components or repaste, The replacement is rougher around the edges. The 6990M in the replacement works fine at stock clocks, but its overclocking abilities are severely restricted compared to the original model. I'm going to have to get the monitor replaced after a green pixel line appeared a week after I received it. Touch pad fit was less perfect, one of the fan screws was loose, little things. All will be fixed (except the 6990M unless it deteriorates further), but it's a pain and repair by Dell techs always involves the risk of further damage. Exchanging units is not risk free or guaranteed to result in a better computer. I suspected the replacement was a return, but my customer rep swears it was manufactured to order for me. Who knows? The plain fact is these M17x-R3's do not enjoy the same build quality as the M15x or the M17x-R2.

Things like that just tick me off. You payed a nice sum of money they should make damn sure its PERFECT. I know theirs always room for a little error like a component malfunction and stuff. But screws missing and bezel parts being misaligned is just ridiculous, and if a tech drops a screw driver on your computer he should be replacing the damaged part.

I plan to benchmark the computer I currently have tho and see how it stacks up to the replacement in that sense.

Got mine 2 days ago, thought it was perfeft, but 1 minor flaw. The battery is loose and can be pushed up a bit. Doesnt really bother me so i doubt i will return mine for that since i heared all these horror stories of people getting bad condition ones.

mine came with a really small ding, didn't really bother me but i called them up about and was offered a special discount, so i end up keeping it instead of asking for a replacement.

The battery part..is common. i had it even in my R2. i just place 3 strips of dual sided tape without removing the adhesive cover on one side. You can innovate better.

Always look at the date at which your machine was shipped. On the outside. It shows when it has come out of the factory in China. If that date is prior to your day of order than they have pulled a fast one on you.

Do show the pictures of this "ding" guys because it helps others to be on the lookout too.

Are you talking about the date on the shipping sticker? Or something else?

On the mainbox..it details place of manufacture etc...there would be more than one stickers which usually do not overlap. Each sticker is slapped on marking details of transit also, with dates etc. Look through the codes etc. You can make out the date.

Also double check in your warranty site. It would mention there date shipped.

Use your "Quotation Code" and " Customer Code" to check the status of your order. Check shipping details.

    19-Aug-2011 Order Received
    20-Aug-2011 Order released to manufacturing
    23-Aug-2011 Manufacturing Build Complete
    23-Aug-2011 Ship from Factory
    23-Aug-2011 Uplift
    27-Aug-2011 Arrived in Main Hub
    29-Aug-2011 Dispatch to Local Courier

This will give you a clue too.

Ahh I see what your talking about. Well all seems good on that my order was placed the 8/23 the labels on here indicated 8/26. Will keep an eye out for that when the replacement comes.

Man its sort of sad to see made in china to be honest. I remember way back when they were still made in and shipped from Florida. I still have my old binder from the desktop I once had. Ah how times change.
