I currently have an M15x and was thinking about upgrading to an M17x, but wanted to do a little digging before making the leap. Upon looking at pics in some of the ads I've found, I've noticed a few little cosmetic differences between the R2s and R3s.. things like the back panels having little grooves in them, kind of like a hood scoop on a car, or wider speaker ports with more light visibility. Are these legit findings, or are my eyes going bad on me?

i haven't actually seen r2 and r3 side by side but i would say these are legit findings especially since the r3 is actually some thinner and lighter than the r2 because of its lack of dual graphics capability.

My R3 is fairly thin, but it's definitely a heavy beast. It's well worth the weight though.
