    just been offered a HD5870 but i already have a 4650 in the 17xr2, would it work by putting it in ? would i notice any difference or will it not work ?

    The cards need to be the same family in order to crossfire them (i.e. 5870m and 5850m or 6990m and 6970m.) So no you cannot crossfire a 5800 series card with a 4650 series card. Lo siento.
