Hello all, I havent had any problems up to this point but i was just playing a game before and i noticed through hwinfo32 that my slave 5870 was not speeding up. First i thought this game might not support which after a google search it didnt so i decided to boot up deus ex hr for peace of mind. Indeed the slave still didnt go. i checked and crossfire is enabled and all that jazz. i then grabbed the amd overclocking tool in the thread here, said it didnt recognise my secondary card when trying to OC it. i then ran ungine bench and held my hands on the sides of the lappy again, massive heat from the left side but dead cold on the right side, i have a laptop cooler so i doubt its overheated and just broke. worse case scenario i ring dell, they bring a complacent tech over to my house who gives me all new parts and then im good to go. just wondering before i ring them back in a few days if anyone has any ideas?

    m17xr2
    i7-920xm no OC.
    cf 5870m duh
    8gb 1333mhz
    pm55 mobo

All bios up to date, 11.10 drivers with CAP4. they are flashed properly i checked.

Not really effecting my gaming much but it would be nice to get skyrim going on both not just one.....

Edit: i reckon i know what is wrong, the last time the tech guy came around and gave me a totally new set of parts and i mean everything, i seriously reckon he didnt plug the crossfire cable in. if thats the case, I LOL HARD.

Edit2: maybe its because im running the laptop through hdmi to a 55" does that for some unknown reason disable my slave? i could try but im lazy xD

Well, i cannot say i had the same problem you have, i purchased a pair of 5870's on ebay, both of them worked fine when i installed them solo in the primary graphics bay, but installing them both on my machine it wouldn't boot up (black screen, no go) i returned the cards to the seller and they confirmed the workings of them in their machine. but they also confirmed they have seen this problem before on Alienware M17x R2's... Thus, there are problems with M17x R2's and 5870's in crossfire. maybe someone else on the forum knows more about this...

Man, i dont know what the heck is going on now lol. I uninstalled my drivers, safe mode, driver sweeper, installed dell drivers, reflashed both cards again, booted up. bsod, restarted worked fine, got into windows, installed 11.10 mobility catalyst and CAP 11.9(4) profile, restarted, didnt boot, resarted, worked fine, at this point im like i dont know what the heck is going on lol. booted fine but now i get this weird error of CLI.implementation error and i cant open CCC at all, it also doesnt show up on the right click menu, then for some crazy reason my screen started flashing. i left it, then windows update tells me it installed the latest graphics driver, i checked and it had installed the dell ones again. i restarted, reinstalled the new driver, restarted and now the cpu is just hanging at max turbo the fans are going up down up down probably because of my extra cooler. So at this point ive conceded that im getting dell to send a technician, imma get a whole new laptop (in retrospect) and skyrim buddy is goin to have to wait. atleast i have darksouls!!!

Edit: sp i fixed all those new problems but im back to square 1 lol, my other graphics card just does not want to do anything at all. idles at 100/150...

Seems like we have a bit of the same problems.

Download HWINFO64, tell me what it sais about your GPUs when you run furmark.
Tell me the utilization, core clock and memoryclock of both cards after running furmark for 2 minutes. (Tell me the "MAX" values)

AND now i cant turn my crossfire back to enable >.>. srsly what in the heck is going on.....

Its not unusual that both the fans boost up when one of the cards is running hot. Don't worry about it, thats not un-usual, just the way that its supposed to be. Worry about the temperatures instead!

Ok, so the things i can read from this, is that your GPU1 (Master card) card is running just fine at the clocks that it is supposed to run at, and its fully utilized. Nothing bad about that!

Now, what you'll need to do, is to get Crossfire running.

    Do this for me please,
    - Uninstall your GPU driver. (ALL of them'),
    - Install DriveSweeper, newest version.
    - Boot into Safe-mode
    - Use Drive Sweeper in Safe-mode to remove ALL your GPU drivers.
    - Boot into normal mode, use CCleaner to remove all faulty registry values.
    - Download the driver from Dell's support website.
    - Install this, and only this.
    - Reboot
    - Try to enable CrossfireX in the Catalyst Control Center.

What happens, do you have the option of enabling xFire?

    - Scott.

Well after staying up WAY to late i ended up getting skyrim at 1230am lol. anyway i get up this morning and ran unigine bench on full screen standard settings. my other card freaking worked, hwinfo64 results.
    GPU1/GPU2
    Util:98.10%/98.60%
    mhz:700/700
    memory:1000/1000

Maybe if you got the same, run the unigine bench at full screen, if it works then IM guessing all the programs we have to recognise the slave dont work properly..... awe well, atleast i know its not bricked or burnt!!!

Edit: i ran it at the settings I had it so 11.10CCC that is now working and 11.9CAP4. I didnt do your steps, i wouldve done them if unigine didnt give me any results which it did so no need.
