A quick question, how future-proof are the xfire 5870s? Approx. how many years do they have left before they can only run things on medium or lower settings? Debating between an R2 which is cheaper or the (vastly?) more powerful but also (vastly) more expensive m18x.

You will probably get 2-3 years with both the M18X and the M17X. PC games today are just ports of console games with very few games looking really good - Metro 2033, Crysis 2, BF3. When the new consoles come out they will have a graphics card equivalent to whatever is the best that year, that is when you should buy a really good PC or Laptop.
