    Hi guys,
Just a question about the crossfire setup. The connection to the secondary card, is there a strap at the end that keeps the cable end in place? Just wondering cause I opened the laptop for the first time today to find that the cable was not connected at all (yeah, dell technicians).

There's not a strap. It's more like one of those little click-down connectors like the one for the electronics on the hinge cover.

I want to say that I'm surprised about the crossfire not being connected, but I'm not.

So I can just slide the cable end into the connector? There's nothing that I can flip to hold it down, so I was worried the previous technician that didn't connect it properly might have broke it or something..
    Thanks

You make sure the little 'lever' is up, slide the end of the crossfire cable in, and press the 'lever' down. I can't really think of what else to call it. On the 4870 it was metal instead of plastic. I highly doubt you would just loosely slide it in and expect it to stay. Can you post a picture?

I don't have the appropriate tools atm, and I don't feel like opening it again as I kinda dented the side of my laptop the previous time I did it. I called the alienware tech support here in UK and they reassured me that there's nothing that holds down the cable, so I just slide it in. I might try opening it again this weekend

On the 5870 there is no securing device, you just slide the cable in the connector and the pressure keeps it in. The cable is taped to the magnesium plate to keep it in the same spot.

he's probably referring to the touch pad at the top. Once you take it off it never sits right again. I even use plastic tools and managed to nick the edges where it meets the plate a little bit.

Aikimox has a thread where he suggests sanding the control cover so it pops off easier. FWIW, I do not have a single nick on any of the control covers I've removed. They're very tricky to get off but once you get a method down, it becomes second nature. What I do is get an old drivers license, slide it under the escape key and push towards the bottom corner. That pushes the tab up and it pops the corner off and you can then use your fingers to pry it. This method ensures there's not a single nick on the plastic.

I was using some body panel trim removal pieces and a plastic screw driver, but it was the first time I was removing it and had already spent 20minutes, so I rushed when I shouldn't have and damaged it very slightly. Haven't had an issue, smooth as silk once you get it off the first time.
