Yesterday I had a problem with Norton Ghost and the online tech made a few "adustments" to my registry. The end result was the computer would not restart and I had the dreaded 'blue screen of death'. But I have Win7 and I was immediatly taken to the boot problem page. Win7 couldn't fix it either so I did a Restore. Now not only does Norton Ghost not work properly but neither does Crossfire.

Both cards are mentioned in device manager and show no problems and I can select Crossfire to be enabled but I cannot select the second card in the CCC Crossfire screen. I ran HW monitor and played Splinter Cell and the second card showed no temp rise and I had a performace loss compared to when both cards were operating so I am convinced that Crossfire is not working.

Interestingly my problem with Ghost was it would not recognise my D drive even though it is visible in My Computer.

I have done a second restore to before the tech touched my computer but that hasn't helped either. I also did a reinstallation of the AMD drivers 10.11 I think. Anybody got any ideas on where I go from here?

And that is the fix? Just do a clean install of Windows and don't use any Nortons products? You make it sound so easy.

How about a method that will fix or at least troubleshoot the problem that I have?

i had almost exactly the same problem for the last few days. Go into safe mode, device manager, right click on the two cards and "Uninstall". Then boot into regular mode, it'd run on either the 9400 or basic drivers. There reinstall the drivers. That fixed it for me.

    Good luck!

No luck. Started in Safe Mode, deleted the drivers, rebooted and reinstalled the 10.11 drivers but the problem still exists. I can enable Crossfire but the second card cannot be selected in the CCC. Thanks anyway.

edit: I have just uninstalled again and tried the original drivers supplied with the computer but still no luck.

I would think that you can phone norton up and say that you have my PC up and so you are now going to replace it due to your ''techies'' trying to get this a program to work.

    Something along those lines.

You have got to believe I have thought of that :D :D I have a complete disk backup done a week ago (via Ghost :p ) and tomorrow night if I have no luck with Crossfire I will install the backup. I had hoped not to do that but if I have no luck trying to fix it then that is what I am going to do.

I have the same problem, cards show up in device manager but not in crossfire. Also FPS supper slow in Benchmarks. Called dell they trouble shot it, said they had seen this problem before mobo. Sending a replacement that they are building now. If you fix this please post would like to see it. Good luck

Dell are going to replace the computer for you :) You must be pretty pleased with that. If that is the fix then unfortunately I am probably going to have to live with this until next August. :( I am in far Eastern Russia and won't be getting back to Aust until then.

Sorry to say I could not find any other fix, wish I could. This was a outlet system with a Blu-ray burner, they cannt replace that so I get a i7 840 and two extra HD's only came with one. So I would like to keep this Red one but they insist on a new build, go figure right.

    Thanks anyway mate.

The fact that one card seems to have died after the Norton rep hacked my computer may just be coincidental. Anyway I will probably wait until the weekend and then try and come from a backup and see what happens and if that doesn't work I will try a clean instal and see what happens then.

I really hope one of my cards hasn't turned into a paperweight while I wasn't looking or even worse my motherboard!

    Hi FrozenSolid

When you uninstalled the HD5870, did you uninstall the drivers?

What I did when for example, when I installed the nes 10.11 ATI drivers my performance dropped considerably, so I whent to device manager and deleted the two HD5870, leaving the drivers alone (as is) restarted the PC let windows detect new devices, restarted again, and every thing was back to normal. Performance improoved.

Sorry not sure if this is what you did, from your response earlier.

    But Good Luck.

In safe mode I right clicked on the first card, selected Uninstall, then ticked the check box to delete the drivers and repeated the process for the second card. Then rebooted normally and reinstalled the drivers.

    OK,

Try just deleting the cards, with out uninstalling the drivers.

Click on them push the delete button on the keyboard select yes delete if asked and restart the PC, don't uninstall the drivers.

Although what you did should work, but I found on my desk top, that when I installed the graphics drivers, with a fresh install of windows 7, that they both appeared in device manager but they did not as work windows was still using its default drivers. so I deleted both display adapters in device manager, restarted the PC. Windows then found the cards restarted again and every thing was working.

    This worked for me.

Last night I tried to do a clean instal and see if that fixed my problem and ... well...... what a nightmare that turned out to be and thank god for Norton Ghost!!!!!

The first thing I need to say is I have done many clean installs on different computers in my life. When I first got the M17x I replaced the C Drive with a SSD and then did a clean install with no problems. I guess I am trying to say I am not exactly a novice here but never have I seen the problems I had here.

The first thing I did was do a back up using Ghost and then downloaded all the latest drivers. Then I installed the Windows disk that came with the computer, shut down and then restarted and booted from the disk. Windows installed OK but then I started installing the drivers and that is when it all went pear shaped. I used the list in this forum and installed in the correct order. The Intel IBEX and IDT92 drivers seemed to install OK but after that nearly every driver would report some errors after the install. After installing all the drivers my original problem of only one Video card working still existed, but in addition my Bluetooth mouse would not work. Windows recognised it but would not connect to it. I had a look in device manager and there were about 6 items that had exclamation marks against them showing they had problems. According to the device manager I had three mice connected and they were all working OK.

I have another copy of windows and tried a clean install with that but used the driver disk that came with the computer (in case I had a corrupted download) with much the same result.

The last thing I did was reinstall the Ghost backup. To be honest after seeing all the hardware problems in the clean installs I was pleasantly surprised to find everything worked OK. Well everything except my second video card.

So I am guessing I have some form of hardware problem. I am open to any suggestions anyone might have?

I went thru the same exact fresh install, including the loss of my blutooth. My mistake was no Ghost to fall back too. :(
I was able to clear up all the (!) except the blutooth which will not install any driver and the loss of one GPU the slave. Still waiting for my replacement to be built, EDD is now 12/13
I wish I knew what was causing this, as Dell will no longer even try to trouble shoot it. They say replacement is coming and since I can surf and play some games they won't spend anymore time. I'll keep checking here in case someone figures this out. :D

Yeah. I hear you but a least you have a replacement coming.

I think I am up the Creek without a paddle because as I mentioned earlier I am in Russia and I bought the computer in Australia and I am not planning on going back to Oz until August next year. I need this computer everyday as it is my work computer (hence the Ghost) and when I do contact Dell it will have to be by email because I am not going to be calling them from here and if they do decide to replace it I am not sure they will want to send one here, or how the Customs and Duty will work out if they do. I guess I had better start researching it.

Has anyone got an email address for a good Dell tech in Aus?

    edit: Sorry Batboy.

You could try and move your tag to Russia, from what I understand it does not matter where in the world you buy you dell product it is supported any where, you just have to move the tag to Dell Russia (I am assuming there is a dell Russia).

But it is very strange that hardware damage would occur from reinstalling windows? or using Norton Ghost.

I think the hardware problem is being highlighted by the reinstall and by Norton and by Crossfire. I don't think either caused the problem.

I will have to contact Dell and see what they can do. Hopefully I can deal with the Aus Dell group but have the replacement computer (if they decide to replace it) come from Russia.

Well I have finally gotten my computer fixed...... 5 months after I first had a problem.

After my last message here I contacted Dell Australia Support by email and told my problems to a tech called Adrian. After some fault finding he decided my Motherboard and both graphics cards needed to be replaced but I needed to contact Dell in Russia to do that. I called them but they didn't have my Service Tag so I had to transfer my tag to Europe and as soon as it was visible they would email me. I did that early in December and by February when I had had no contact from Dell I emailed Adrian again. He tried to contact the Russians to get them to respond but was getting nowhere as well. All this time my computer is working but only on one graphics card.

Well I unexpectedly had to return to Oz for a couple of weeks at the beginning of April so as soon as I knew I was coming I contact Adrian again. I arrived in Townsville at lunchtime on the Friday and the techie was here by 4:30 changing my motherboard and both graphics cards. Everything worked well while the techie was here ....... I installed Furmark and both cards were working and heating. Great I thought. The techie leaves and I decide to get into Shogun 2. Ten minutes into the tutorial the computer freezes with a sound loop happening, 10 seconds later a blue screen and an automatic shutdown.

The only way to get the computer to start and run was start in safe mode and delete the graphics drivers and after that the computer would start but of course my resolution was 800 x 600. I tried a clean install, ....... I tried a reformat followed by another clean install, ....... I tried holding the computer upside down while doing a clean install, ...... I tried installing the original drivers, ...... I tried everything but as soon as I installed graphics drivers the computer would hang at the 'starting windows' screen. Another email to Adrian the Dell support guy. He suggested the problem might be an incompatibilty with the SSD (C) and the regular 500 GB drive (D).

So I removed a 500 GB drive from another computer and swapped it with my C Drive and reformatted it. Well unfortunately by now it was nearly midnight and this was my 4th or 5th format and I wasn't paying the attention I should have and I formatted my D drive and lost all my photos, and all my music. I have a backup in Russia but I am fairly sure I have lost a month or so of photos. Anyway I had a little dummy spit, not directly at Adrian but he received the email (sorry Adrian).

Adrian then organised another home visit for me but this time they replaced nearly everything except my wifi card. And presto everything works ...... except the techie broke the ribbon connector on my touchpad. Time is getting close for mew to return to work. I have tickets to fly out on Sunday and Adrian again comes to the rescue and the techie comes around to replace my palmrest on the Friday before I leave....Good Friday!!!!!!!!

The bottom line is, it is working and I am as happy as pig in the proverbial mud puddle. My next step is to try and get a message to Dell to express my thanks to Adrian. :D :D :D

edit: Before I posted the original here I also posted a problem I had with my built in camera and I never got it to work and of course the original problem with Ghost not recognising my D drive. Well those problems have also been fixed so maybe I had a motherboard problem from the start?
