i tried their update utility, but i just get a "windows has failed to start" screen after reboot, and i tried following their instructions to make a bootable USB with the firmware update, but my comp just booted as normal... what can i do?

EDIT: i got it to boot with the update, but it stopped at "-initdisk" and i had to hard reboot. what should i do?

Worked for me it's mainly for windows 8, disconnect external drives.
Create a bootable USB use this http://rufus.akeo.ie/ set file system to FAT32>check quick format>check extended label>check using ISO image>select the crucial .ISO, set boot options to USB F12 enjoy.

The bios is set to AHCI ? If so disconnect the drive for 10 min and try again (above method), no windows load.
If it's set to Raid mode switch to AHCI with the USB plugged in, when it finishes updating quickly press F2 and set it back to Raid mode. Very important, don't let windows load until it's set to Raid; if windows attempts to load anyway shut down.

I just updated my firmware to 040H today using the utility and didn't do anything special. If it makes a difference, I had my utility downloaded directly to my desktop and ran it as admin. I agreed to the terms and off it went to reboot and firmware flashing. After it's done it'll reboot on its own.

The Windows installer failed me in the past, the bootable disc or flash drive method always worked though. Crucial has a guide on how to make a bootable flash drive (or disc) on their website too.

Agreed, the bootable disc/drive method is fool proof. This was my first time using the utility cause I ran out of CDs and didn't want to waste an entire DVD LOL.

I agree with the above, the past few updates have done the exact same thing to me when I used the windows installer. So now I only use the bootable disk method (luckily CD-ROMs are fairly cheap these days...I guess I could get a RW, but since I use them so infrequently anymore I simply just but cheap CD-R's and get rid of it after the update is complete)

You don't need to burn a cd/dvd. You can "install" the iso to a usb drive and boot off that as well. the only thing us that the usb should be empty.
