I just installed Crysis 2. It runs just fine, but I haven't played it too much. If I open up MSI Afterburner, the clocks are set at 300/150. Even if I try to OC it. If I try to continue playing, my laptop shuts off. I would like to be able to monitor my temps and FPS using MSI OSD. I'm on 12.7 drivers, could it be a driver issue?

are you plugged in or on battery? Do you have your ccc and power profiles on maximize battery life instead of maximize performance? Did you set up AB to show the OSD?

I'm sorry I'm having a hard time following your issue.

So all in all Crysis 2 is giving you a black screen when you OC? but when you don't it runs fine?

Sounds driver related... Maybe also Powerplay related? Is the GPU really running that slow, or is Afterburner reporting it incorrectly?

Everything is set up right. I can run benchmarks and oc and everything is good.

When I load up Crysis, it plays on the stock clocks of 850/1200. It plays fine, but like I said, I haven't played it much. Pretty much just got through the beginning cut scenes. I wanted to monitor my temps and FPS, so I opened up Afterburner (I have it set up to where the OSD will start when AB starts. I also have HWiNFO set up to show my temps and clocks. So my OSD shows my system time, GPU temps, GPU Clocks, and FPS.) I then opened up Crysis and my OSD shows the clocks at 300/150. I then change the screen to windowed mode and move it over and my GPU gadget on my desktop also shows the clocks at 300/150. I'll then do an OC to see if it'll kick in, and the screen starts to tear and jitter. I reset the clocks and it fixes the tearing, but the clocks still stay at 300/150. If I try to start a new game, or continue a game, the FPS drop to about 1 during the loading screen. It'll then freeze, then a few moments later, it shuts down.

I've even tried to run AB after starting Crysis, but the same thing happens. I kept the game on windowed mode so I could see my GPU gadget on the desktop. It shows my clocks at 850/1200 while the game is running. When I open up AB, the clocks drop to 300/150. I'm guessing it's boiling down to a driver issue, or an issue with AB. I'll try a different driver tomorrow when I got the time.

Note: I am plugged in, MSI AB and OSD is set up correctly, PowerPlay is set up to maximum performance. Everything is set up properly.

Update: I was able to load up OSD without having to open up AB by going into the OSDServer folder within the MSI Afterburner directory. I was able to monitor my FPS while playing, and I was on stock clocks (I didn't load up HWiNFO, so I didn't get to monitor my temps). It appears that I am having issues with AB itself. I'm using 2.2.1. I've heard that 2.2.2 doesn't play well with the 7970M. I might give it a shot tomorrow to see what happens. I'm also going to try a different drivers to see if another one will allow me to OC for Crysis 2.

I'm just trying to figure out why it's even necessary. My 675M plays it great on extreme at 1920x1080, I'm quite a ways in and have yet to deal with any noticeable slowness. The 7970M is much faster stock. Stop the madness and game!

Have you already changed any of your DWORD values from 1 to 0 for every instance of EnableULPS in the registry? If not, that's probably what is causing your problems. They should all be set at 0 (zero). Additionally, you'll need to modify your MSIAfterburner.cfg file by changing the zero to a 1 for UnofficialOverclockingMode (even if you're not going to overclock). Use NotePad to open the .CFG file for editing. For what it's worth, both versions of Afterburner that you mentioned work fine with 7970M for me and a number of other users.

I have the cfg file edited, but I think I forgot about changing the reg files. I'll give that a go.

On stock clocks I float around 30 FPS on Ultra. I'd like to see where I can go with an OC. Plus, with AB giving me the issues it has, I'd like to resolve them before I "Stop the madness and game".

Just tried AB 2.2.2 and did all the required changes to the cfg file and the registry. I'm not able to OC with this version. AB shows my clocks at 0. Looks like I need to revert back to 2.2.1. I just installed the official beta drivers (I think I was already on them, but can't remember for sure, lol). I'll give these a go and if it's still having issues, I'm going to either try the modded 12.7s or 12.6.

Not sure what is going on with this card and this game. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I'm able to play and OC, but after a few min my laptop freezes or just shuts off. It even shuts off on stock clocks now. I was able to get AB 2.2.2 to work though, but it seems this game just doesn't want to work in my system. It's strange, I can OC this card all the way up to 1050/1600 and run 3DMark11 or 3DMark Vantage without any issues, but I can't play Crysis 2 on stock clocks.

Would having the drivers installed on my SSD and the game and MSI AB installed on my 2nd HDD be causing my issues?

Is anyone else having issues OCing and running Crysis 2?

The game is very playable on Extreme settings. I get between 30-50 FPS depending on what is happening on screen. I just want to try and figure out these issues I have with OCing on this card.

I am able to OC and play other games. Crysis 1 has no issues with OCing and running, although I only tested for a few min. I'm also running into problems when I revert back to stock clocks. When I revert back, my FPS will drop down to less than 10. It seems the card drops to a down clocked state. If I give it an OC, even if it's just 855/1200, it jumps back up.

Is this a normal thing? Are there some settings I need to set on AB to get it to work?

ok, so it seems like you have other issues. have you tried reinstalling the game with the latest patches available?

I haven't reinstalled yet. I do have all the patches though. Do you think there is a conflict with having everything on my separate drive and not on my SSD? I doubt that is causing any problems.

I'm still not sure why when I revert from an OC to stock clocks, I can't game at all. It just drops everything down to the powered down clocks of 300/150.

no i have most of my games on my HDD (including crysis 2) and it runs fine

When you do afterburner OC and then drop the clocks back to default, you really should reboot. The laptop gets confused. That's why i say, overclock it to something you want and just leave it. Powerplay is still active so the clocks will still drop when not underload

    That makes sense.

I'm going to uninstall then reinstall it to see if that will fix my issue.

I just reinstalled Crysis 2 and am still not able to run an OC on it. I hope this is the only game that causes this issue for me.

I think I'm going to try to flash a modded bios with some gaming clocks (950/1400 is what I normally run) and see if the game will run.

My crysis used to crash on stock vbios, and higher clocks, i upped it to 1075 and it wan 950/1350 crashed once every 30 minutes, so i lowered clocks to 940/1325 and that made it stable.

Unfortunately you have a bad overclocker just as i do, dont try to stress it as it will ultimately have the card fail. Keep the card cool on a cooler and run 1075v @ 940/1325 and youll be fine

If the card fails however... Dell will send you a new one... Cogh*cough*....

I can run 3dMark 11 and Vangtage at 1020/1550 or 1010/1600 on stock voltage. I have ran Crysis 1 at 950/1400 without any issue.

It seems I'm having problems with just Crysis 2. I've tried the overvolted bios, same thing happens. I just tried my modded bios at 950/1400, but same thing happens.

This card overclocks like a champ. It just doesn't want to play with this game.

Crysis 2 and Crysis often balk at an overclocked GPU and CPU. One thing you might try is to delete (or temporarily move and rename for testing) the folder with all of your saved games. Every time I have changed GPU I have needed to do that to make some games stable, including Crysis 2 and Crysis.

I think I was able to do a 900/1300 OC on Crysis 2. Funny thing is, Crysis 1 runs fine at 950/1400+ without any issues. I can OC every game I have tried so far without any issues, besides Crysis 2. Not a big deal, Crysis 2 runs great without the need of an OC. Just wanted to make sure nothing was wrong with my card or setup that was causing the issues with Crysis 2. It appears it's just the game.
