I would love to own an Alienware m17x, the only draw back is the price. After looking at how much it would cost with the specs I want it comes to 2700+. I could bite the bullet and do this, but before I do I was curious if I could buy a m17xR2 with base specs and then after market add in 2x GeForce GTX 470, Intel i7 2720QM and 8gbs 1666mhz ram?

Is this possible? Would I even save any $$?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated

the r2 doesn't support the newer cpu's or 1666mhz ram. and i don't think it has bios support for the 470m either. :(

You're looking at the wrong laptop if you want all of that. It does not support it.

Wish it was that easy to upgrade..would have been awesome.

You could buy a 2nd hand R2 or a refurbished one with low specs and then upgrade it to SSD, i7 920XM, XF 5870 and Led screen, that's the road i took and fullfilled my needs (different specs though)

the processor- and card you mention can not be placed into a R2, if you want these upgrades you have to look for a R3

If you decide to go with R2 then pick up r2 with Minimum RGB 1200p screen and Crossfire 5870. Everything else you can upgrade for cheap aftermarket and get better quality parts with a warranty as well. If you get the M17x R3 then go with 2720qm, ATI 6970 and 1080p Wled screen.
