ok, can you run HWinfo32 and on the menu program, go to Video adapter,
select nvidia geforce gtx460m and on the right can you copy/paste the Hardware ID.
If you have the same as me, i know the solution, if you got a different one ( will be strange) i will add your hadware id.

    In your case burnt,
    download this driver
    NVIDIA DRIVERS 270.61 WHQL

and when you start installation, you will got an error,
    so close installation,
go to my modded driver folder,
and copy paste Display.Driver folder to the original one ( downloaded above )
Start again the installation by running setup.exe and It should accept installation.

Hi, just a question. If you run HWInfo32 you see the Nvidia GTX460M card under video cards?
I dont see anything but the Intel one. I have BSOD with my new R3 and I'm thinking it is a HW Nvidia Card problem...
    Thanks

hmm yes, u need to see Nvidia gtx460m, so maybe try to switch gpu with fn+F7 or try to instal the driver given by dell on their website, after that, run again hwinfo32 to see if it's showing.

If you can't instal dell nvidia driver, so you got a problem.

Bad news, fn-f7 popup a window "This does not do anything". The drivers are official Dell and installs without problems, but the GPU optimus activity window says none even I run render or opengl tests. So I think it's a hardware problem :(

One question. Do you have any screen issues? For example when I close my screen while the computer is on, I set it to do nothing. But sometimes it just stays at a black screen and nothing will show up even when I move my mouse. I set it to never sleep or turn off hd. Aside from that no complaints so far but this does create a bit of inconvenience.

And I lied, second question. Is there a way to turn the screen off without sleeping the computer? On the Asus g73 I can do fn and f7 to turn off the backlight.

Alienware has a bug that we know. It on all alienware, when u put u computer on sleep mode while closing the screen, it's a problem that they never fix in each alienware :/

Yep sure, go to alien command center, alienfusion, bouton d'alimentation ( logo with alien head)==> case n*7 and chose what to do when you close the screen^^

As mentioned by darcoder, the 6970m would be a better bang for your buck. I would try and return it and order one with a 6970m, because buying one seperately will run you 500-650$+, and you won't be able to sell the 460m as you need it for warranty purposes.

Hmm.. the reason I didnt bought 6970m was because its around 400bucks more...kinda short of money... I was planning to do an upgrade in the future when i got the money... So is it true that i can buy the 6970m from dell in the future or should i just ask them to help me upgrade?

Darcoder, I messaged you but I figured I would post here as well.

I'm using your custom driver and it worked well for my 460m but when I just installed my 485m nvidia says " You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU " if i select the nvidia control panel.

I ran HWinfo32 and it does detect the 485m as "nVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M (GF104)"

can I do a inf mod or something to get it working right or do I need to reinstall new drivers?

DARCODER, I've done all the steps in your instructions:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/575595-nvidia-driver-update-m17x-r3.html#post7454428

    I can't seem to be able to install this package (270.61 gtx460m et 485m m17x R3). The installer goes through its processes and after the system check, license agreement and options;

    NVIDIA Installer Failed

Everything says not installed, and the graphics driver itself says Failed.

I've owned many, MANY systems, and I've never had as many problems as I have with this R3.

    I can't even install the stock archived NVIDIA drivers direct from NVIDIA;

267.76 - FAIL. Install Cannot Continue (required files are missing)
266.58 - FAIL. Install Cannot Continue (the graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware). [...SERIOUSLY?]

Hi, I just got some free time installing the drivers. As mentioned before, Im using 460m with 60hz screen. The installation works fine, no error, but after rebooting, i cant open the Nvidia control panel and whenever I try running a game it crashes...

Did I install it wrongly? I didnt uninstall the previous drivers because after uninstalling and rebooting the computer will just detect a new hardware(460m) and install the default driver...

Sorry for the delayed reply, DARCODER.

    Same error as before:

FAIL. Install Cannot Continue (the graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware).

I'm running the stock R3 3D Bundle screen (which I believe is 120).

I tried a reboot, which got me further in the process (didn't give me the "couldn't find hardware" error), but still failed the install.
