I have sad news to report, that my beloved 7970M has perished. Started with lines on the screen, then black screen. Still recognized in the BIOS, but anytime it gets under load, it dies (black screens). I tried heat gun + flux, no go.....really don't want to go to another 7970M, I don't know how the reliability of the 8970M or R9 M290X. Rumors are they have better silicon in them. Avoiding nVidia due to lack of professional compute cores on the GTX series. Anybody know if new AMD cards are coming?

ah technos, seems you got your own experiment subject afterall.
    sorry it didn't workout well.
regardless of what you said as "lack of professional compute cores", i'm still enjoying my 680m as suggested by mickyd. so far so good, great temps, great performance, only time will tell w/ the durability.

Thats good. nvidia GTX sucks for siemens NX, CAD, maya, etc....stuf my radeon did no problem.

I have not seen any problems for the 8970M like I have for the 7970M. The 8970M seems to undervolt and overclock better than the 7970M, so I am assuming they used a higher grade silicon...so its probably also more reliable.

I haven't seen many issues with the newer ones either (290x). Let us know how everything goes once you get the replacement card.
