I had complained about throttling and dell has offered to replace my laptop after putting in new heatsinks failed to solve the heat issue but I don't want that as I need the laptop because of some work.

The dell person said that this is a known issue and in some systems the nvidia card is shipped with the amd bracket by mistake which causes this issue. How can I check whether I have the correct bracket? Where is the bracket positioned?

My guess is it is attached to the graphics card at the back. So wont changing the graphics card solve the issue??

And when the heatsink was replaced today the dell tech changed something from the back of the graphics card? It was a hollow rectangle kind of thing with 4 legs sticking out diagonally. Is that the bracket?

The problem is I hit 77C easily within 10 minutes of gaming. I am using CRYO lx too.

    What should I do??

Can they not ship you the right bracket?
    Did you repaste?

It should throttle at 100 or somerhing like that. The throttle you experience at 77 is something else, there is info about that on this forum and a fix if I'm correct.

Nah!! Fix is only for the throttle around 65C. No fix for 77C

I asked them to ship a new gpu with correct bracket. They said they'll call back and tell me.

If it's because of the bracket, this one should have a plate and cover a row of memory chips on the back of the card. The contact is between the plate and chips is made by a piece of thermal pad.

@ Chaos92 -- I had a similar situation. The 580M heatsink was not correct, but the details were somewhat different. You will notice that the exposed copper portion of the heatsink varies depending on the card. The AMD heatsink copper area is oriented to conform to the 6900M cards, i.e., it is rotated about 45o so that a corner is facing the MXM slot, whereas the 580M's short side is parallel with the slot. The result is that sometimes you do not get full coverage of the GPU by the exposed copper. In my situation, the exposed copper section was properly aligned, but too small. The result was that roughly a third of the 580M was in direct contact with the thermal tape/material instead of the copper. That was resulting in temps routinely rising to the high 70's to low 80's and inducing throttling. When I finally had a eurika moment and recognized the issue with the heatsink, I simply removed the thermal material from the copper portion of the HS. Since then, 580M temps rarely exceed 70C (3dMark11 at stock clocks tops out at ~65-66C), with a maximum of 73C under extreme load, and throttling has disappeared to such an extent that I don't even bother setting the P1 clocks when overclocking the 580M. I hesitate to recommend my method to others because I don't know whether there could be collateral consequences at some future time as a result of removing the thermal material, but I doubt it, and it sure has worked for me. It's something to consider.

Edit: The tag on my HS is AT0FJ0030C0. (I note that widezu69's HS is AT0FJ0020F0, which is apparently the correct one.)

@ The revelator- thanks man! will open up my laptop and see if what you are saying is applicable to me. Though I am pretty sure that I have the correct heatsink as the heatsink is not rotated by 45o.

I will click some pics and put it up later.. Please help me identify whether I have the correct heatsink and bracket. Ok?

@katalin- yeah my bracket is exactly how you described it.. so i guess it is the correct one.. will put up pics tomorrow..
