Spoke to 5 different reps online AND phone. They refuse to give me the P/N and each time it's the same story. They do not sell the 680M by itself. If I want it I need to purchae a NEW system. What's the deal?

I've basically been in the same situation as you. Ordered m17x R4 with 675m while and I wanted to either order the part or change my order details. I could do neither, and since I need my system sooner rather than later, I decided to leave it alone. You could pay an arm and a leg for it here: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M; 4GB DDR5;1344 CUDA; MXM 3.0b ALIENWARE UPGRADE KIT | eBay

Here's hoping that they lower the price soon

Maybe I should have jumped on widezu's heh...This is nuts >_>

dark: the 4GB from my understanding has fan issues with the Alienware models and it has to be manually controlled and it's hard to OC...

It is just because it is in short supply. They will fill new orders before allowing parts orders. There is a specific email for upgrades or you can use the social media contacts and they can give you more and better information than the random agents. However, for the next few months it probably is going to be cheaper to sell your R3 and buy an R4, as the 680m is like $800+, I am sure you could sell your R3, add in $800, and easily get an R4 with 680m.

not really interested in upgrading other stuff...I would rather pay the $800 and keep my laptop. Works great + it would be a hassle switching my 3 ssd's over ;)

Up to you, just be aware that the 680m does not work perfectly in the R3. No boost, no 3D support, no (or very difficult) overclocking.

You might end up having more trouble over the long haul trying to put an unsupported card in the R3.

You can get one right now for $840 and they claim it will work with the R3. I have no idea if that card will, what problems it will have, etc. I know the seller is pretty reputable, but I just don't have the cojanes to spend $800+ on an unwarrantied mobile graphics card, I have had way too many fail.

Yea, the 3D thing kind of bothered me...Interesting question does the R4 board fit in the R3?

Hmm. That's £95 of it. ;) I expected this sort of price and their warranty and dedication to resolving issues makes me less annoyed at this 'gouging'.

Interesting email I just got when I asked about warranty:

'regarding the change of graphics cards, according to dell internal polici, we have parts that are CRU, which means the parts that customers are alowed to replace by themselves without loosing their warranty, like memory modules, HDDs, but unfortunatelly, graphics card is not one of them. So if you will buy the graphics card by yourself cheaper from 3rd party reseller, it will not only be excluded as an upgrade, but by changing the graca by yourslef you will also loose your warranty.'

So it's an extra £400 or so to keep my warranty and have dell on-call for issues - guess I can just about swallow that - still thinking about it

Wait a minute, does this mean that if I were to upgrade the gfx card myself, I would lose the 4 year advanced plan that I dropped $630 on, just like that? Seems pretty harsh to me, but I did read elsewhere that you can replace most parts of an alienware without voiding the warrenty. Now I just don't know what to think

No one on earth would know if you keep your original card.

I can't believe you're considering it! That's an obscene amount of money for a graphics card!

What's worse is the guy a few posts down in this forum who has TWO in SLI mode!!! Moneybags!!! Jealous...lol

This is probably the reason why we are not offering it at the moment for spare parts.

Just keep the original one handy in the case you need a warranty replacement or something.

I wished, although I was in that situation before having to give up work :(.

Just had my 3rd windfall of totally unexpected money! Tax rebate from years ago, disability benefit back-payment, and today I get a letter from a solicitor holding a bunch of money from a property I sold many years ago - result! So, now to frivously spend some :D
Thanks, I've seen that there are quite a few regional variations even though the letter of the warranty is global. This would be a 'put it back to original configuration' and talk about whatever the problem is eventuality, not mentioning replacing the card unless it is relevant. That is the only reason I'm considering the huge cost, a safety net of not having the dismantle my machine if there is some problem. And I've had a few, but thankfully resolved to my complete satisfaction :)

Someone mentioned earlier that the card might not be available yet as a "part" until more total units come available. That is a real possibility. When I had my R2 with only one 5870 and wanted to buy a second one they would not sell me the second 5870 (this was literally days after the R2 with 5870m was released). At first it was just like what you were hearing, "No we dont sell that by itself, no we dont have the part number." Eventually I was able to learn from a different phone tech that it wasnt available individually yet as they were filling "new" orders first.

So I had to get mad and demand they exchange my R2 since the over the phone tech never offered me the crossfire option in the first place.

Long story short, they approved my exchange and then I got my new system with 5870's in crossfire.

If I had waited until they were ready to see me the part individually it would have beend 10-12 weeks...the exchange took 3 weeks.
