Dell sent wrong screen - should be 3D. Do I need to do anything to get the machine ready for upgrade?

    Hi guys.

I bought an R4 off the outlet and was unlucky to only receive a normal 1080P screen when it should be the 3D screen....actually the reason I bought it. All other parts are correct, including the 680M GPU and 3840 CPU. So, Dell agreed to send out a tech tomorrow to change the screen (with the 3D screen) but as the 3D setup doesn't have optimus do I need to do something to get the system ready? The technician I spoke with had no idea so I want to be sure.

Is it not true that the machine can have issues if you try and use the onboard HD 4000 on a 3D system? I just want to be sure I have the machine set up correctly when the tech comes to replace the screen.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Hi, You'll be fine. The display assembly contains the emitter for the glasses (do you have those?), and the display plugs into a different port on the MB to bypass the on-board GPU , no settings need changing ;)

Yes, people (me included) have tried things like a modified BIOS to get the iGPU working but it is not possible - a brick is the usual outcome :(

Don't worry, the 3D screen will be plugged into the eDP port. The way to tell is it has screws on it, The regular LVDS doesn't The eDP will bypass the Intel 4000. Don't worry you'll be fine. What I would suggest doing is removing the Intel display drivers but if I were in your shoes, I would just remove them after the display is installed.

Thanks guys, that's great. Unfortunately I didn't get any glasses as it was an outlet purchase but that's ok - I got a great machine for a great price so if everything goes well with the screen being replaced, I'll feel well and truly chuffed.

Ok, I'll uninstall the Intel drivers after the screen has been replaced.

    Thanks again.

If the glasses are in the purchase order Dell emailed you call Tech support and tell them they were in the purchase order and they will send them right out to you. I had the same problem and got them NBD. :D

I read a lot this forum, but not found a solution to my problem:

I have not determined iGPU built into the BIOS, and when you use FN + F7 window appears that says "Your graphics solution is automatically configured for optimal performance" and nothing else happens, the driver for the Intel GPU is not installed and writes that not enough configuration

But after reading your post I thought it was normal.
Did I understand correctly that the 120Hz monitor iGPU should not work

    My configuration notebook M17xR4, 3840QM, 680M, 120Hz 3D, WIN7...

Correct. The iGPU is on-die of the CPU but dell had to disable it for a 120hz display to pass POST (bios startup). Do NOT get a modified bios to turn on the iGPU. As said it will brick - been there done that as well!

Thanks for your reply, I have now calmed down, I was worried that the CPU is broken

np, So you do have the 120hz display :D. You should be able to select it in the display control panel (and the driver should show it under stereoscopic as well).

If you look in device manager and see the 'nvidia stereoscopic 3D USB' under USB Controllers then all you need is the glasses to try out the 3D. Truly awesome IMO in the right games - couldn't go back for sure!

Yes 3D is cool, but I wanted to switch to the iGPU to save battery, I use this laptop on a yacht and I need a large autonomy. I regret that 120hz added this problem with switching graphics, DELL nowhere indicates that, I think that it is cheating customers is not good

I think having no igpu is a good thing.
A lot of people who upgrade their gpu doesnt have optimus.
The 3d panel (sec5044 in my case) are really good screens, with good colour reproduction and high brightness, en 120hz refreshrate..

I love my screen.. And if this means i have lower battery time? I dont care!! I rather have a good/better screen..

And if u change gpu for a newer model, u have to disable the igpu no matter what.. So really.. Who cares having no optimus

I understand your explanation, I also like this 120Hz screen, but I do not understand why DELL does not indicate this feature in the specifications, they should honestly inform the buyer about the specifications may be for me iGPU was very necessary option, but they have deprived me of this without warning. I paid money for a complete package, including the iGPU. And now, after 10 months of my excitement about CPU broken, I know that iGPU should not work with installed 120Hz monitor

I have said so many times that dell are failing their customers with limited information on the 120hz model. If you needed 5+hours of battery time you are screwed. Maybe one day they will accurately describe the 3D model

i know this gpu EATS battery, old fermi architecture..
it is clocking back by insane amount, but still runs warm and eats battery
