Alright i own a m17x r1. My warranty expired EXACTLY 1 month before the FX board went out. Ive read and read and chitted and chatted trying to find resolutions. Done it all from simple hard restarts, to CMOS battery fixes, to registry edits, and fresh OS installs. So im just gonna say the FX board has gone out.

Now dell says i cant renew my warranty even though i offer to pay for it. They wont let me trade in for a m15x even while i pay the difference. They dont wanna give me my money back (thats messed up). So i paid 2200 dollars for this thing that wont perform correctly. They said it would be 500-1000 dollars to fix. They leave me with two options... Pay a grand to have them fix it.. or throw it through their office building doors.

But really what the hell can i say to these people... Ive spent over $10,000 at dell, and have a premier business account. Yet they wont even simply let me buy another warranty or swap me a refurb or even downgrade to a 15x... I just want my damn lights back on so i know when the damn thing is loading or not.

any help is appreciated guys, Thanks!

Not much you can do... you allowed the warranty to expire. Guessing you only selected a 1yr option.

On a 15x or 17x or any other system for that matter, which I spend more than a grand on, if I plan on safeguarding my investment I opt for a 4 yr.

You can always purchase a motherboard from Dell or one of the third party sites on the net.

    Best of luck.. sorry. :(

youd think a business account that supplies my work with pc's, tens of thousands of dollars, someone is going to pull a string. I feel im ready to pay 1000 dollars worth of a ticket of it going through someones office window instead of fixing it. I assumed i wouldnt need more of a warranty cause my 4 other laptops from dell dont have issues ever, and the 2200 dollar one does. Ill prolly just sell it. They told me its worth 200 bucks. so yeah....

Your warranty expired. That's what warranties are for. You really can't complain.

You should have extended the warranty while it was still active. They don't allow you to extend it once it's gone; that's simple business practice.

You got unlucky, and you're saying that Dell sucks because YOU didn't get a longer warranty. I'm not blaming you, but I'm saying you can't really complain because Dell won't fix it out of warranty. That's standard business practice. That's how they make money. Sure, being nice to customers is one thing, but then they don't make a profit, so the company will die.

Of course it's going to cost 500-1000 dollars to fix, they have to replace the whole damn motherboard.

thanks speedy i like that option too. dell wanted 20 bucks for the manual for taking it apart too, which is stupid. Im sure this question floats around alot, but is the r2 mobo replacement an option for the r1 system or is a diff mounts n what not all together?

    thanks guys

You want your money back after it fails and is no longer under warranty? Do other companies do that for you on items that are over $1K? If it costs like $20 maybe I can see that to keep your business. If they did that they would no longer be in business.

if you try to upgrade to the R2 you may get in to more problems then solutions because you will need new CPU,CPU heat sink , and who knows what else

i recommend you fix it with the stock parts and sell it to buy something else down the road :)

they have fixed multiple systems of mine w.o the warranty at warranty costs or nearly free because all i did was edge them. An AW tech told me the further warranties are not worth it at the time of purchase. They wanted upwards of 600dollars for a 4yr warranty. I dont see why i listened to him. But considering we do large scale business with them, they should come down to the customer is always right. I go out of my way to make my customers happy even if it costs me 6 grand. i dont see how one laptop replacement can set them back this much hassle. even for me to spend 250 on a warranty replacement...

Look Here for Mobo and Here for disassembly. At the bottm of the 1st post is a link for manuals. FREE!!!! Pretty easy actually.

I have no idea about the mounting points and differences on the R1 and R2.

basic business practice from preschool is the customer is always right. I print a job that costs 800,000 dollars, the color is off by a pixel, i wont let them take the product because its not what they wanted so i simply deal with it and reprint the stock. little debbie snacks are picky people. They come at me if it isnt 100% right. They come at me if they product fades on the shelf from the light after the deals been done, yet i either get sued or just reprint at my cost. Easy fix, avoid the problem by making them happy. My problem with dell is just a much smaller scale. I appreciate the help guys really, this isnt my field in computers at all. I know a majority of you are prolly reps for these companies and i mean no offense to you literally. It just a laptop that shouldnt ever break down. They call it the bently of laptops, well bentlys dont go down

and to tell me theyd give me 200.00 for it is a little insulting.

Yeah, my point exactly. I don't mean to offend, but you really can't complain about a company fixing a product out of warranty.

Perhaps the warranty repairs they've done for you earlier are significantly cheaper. If the FX board is shorted out, it means a whole motherboard replacement like I've already said.

The reason it's so expensive for the warranty is because the laptop IS expensive. They need to mark up the warranty so they don't make a loss through the warranty repairs. Even though they're rare, warranty repair/replacement on a laptop this expensive is not cheap as you can imagine, so they need to make the warranty more expensive to cover themselves.

The occasional Bentley WILL break down, just like the occasional M17x will break down as well. And you've got one of those unlucky ones that breaks down.

It's simple maths. No product is perfect in this world of ours. There are very few (if any) production products in history where not a single one has broken down.

You can't deduce from the fact that your one has broken down that they're all flawed and not as well built as you thought.

Hahahahahahahaha!!!! Reps?!!!?!!!?!?! You just made the funny of the day. Most of us are regular Joes that take our time to try to help others voluntarily. I would doubt there are many if any "reps" here trying to spy. We are in it just like you are.

Keep in mind, stuff breaks. I have 250 days left on my 1 year warranty, and you bet I WILL upgrade before it goes out-prolly to a 4 year. Just in case. You think Bentlys and Beamers never have probs just cause they cost a lot?? C'mon man!!!???

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a perfect piece of electronic equipment. Especially when one is made from many smaller pieces of breakable electronics. Extended warranty is your best bet in the future unless your willing to buy a new system after the initial warranty expires.

I don't think that you cannot extend your warranty after it expires.
y m1730 warranty expired on Feb as I didnt cared because it was working fine. Later my gpu fried and I contacted Dell after 4 months. They let me buy another gpu for $400 or get a warranty for $350 included $50 recertification charges. Now I got a M17x replacement as well as a 2 yr warranty. So, you might wanna talk with Dell Sales Rep. They will help you out. Techncal support wont allow but sales people do allow. As this happened to me so I am 100% sure it can be done. Take Care

No Reps here! I spent $786.46 for 2 extra years of reg warranty and 3 years complete care to protect my investment. And you throw insults and want Dell to fix yours for cheap or free, nerve.

I know others have had thier warranties extended after it had expired so it sucks they taken this stance with you.

Try putting it back in Dells court by telling them you expected Dell to contact you prior to the warranty expiring to extend it.

and escalate the issue if you have not already

And try Dell Chat as opposed to calling them

im sorry for snapping in previous posts, i just had some heat left in me. Ive done the chats n calls. Im waiting on some emails from corporate about the warranty. But in the mean time ill explain my main use for it which is Audio Processing. I mainly use the m17x for Protools Le. If i were to sell it, it sounds like there would be a few buyers here already. I really have no idea what to sell it for. dell says 1k would be the best option. Well if i told someone what i was looking for then id prolly get more business. But ill browse the site for those forums before posting crap here.

Its just only been 26 days since the warranty went out and it grinds me that they put me to hell on it and wouldnt accept my visa for another 400 for a warranty.

Any tips on what i could even go about saying to them to help my situation move a little in my way? i understand what you guys say. It is what it is, really, the warranty is out, the laptops time is done. But my account isnt done there and the 10k+ money ive spent there will only continue to accumulate. Its gotta come down to having a heart in these people and not just a friggin cpu lol.

    thanks again people.

We can go ahead and close this post.

Ive decided to either trade it or sell it or fix it myself at which ever is most efficient. Thanks for the help and the support on being able to choose these options.
