Hello I recently purchased an Alienware M17x with these specs,

    Alienware M17x Soft-Touch, Stealth Black
    Intel Core i7 2720QM 2.2GHz (3.3GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
    8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz (4DIMMS)
    Alienware M17x 240W A/C Adapter
    17.3-inch WideHD+ 1600 x 900 60Hz WLED
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
    640GB Raid 0 (2x 320GB 7,200RPM)

And I didnt really think much of the 900p as I have a 22inch Screen and the resolution on that is 1680x1050, so I thought what the hell for a 17inch that resolution should be enough, but after lurking and reading I am having doubts that I will not be satisfied with the 900p, does any one have any feed back with the 900p, is it enough or should I call now while its in production to try and change it?

Ah everything is amazing untill you get to the screen. I would change it. That 1080p screen is one of the most important parts of the config for me.

if you cant change it in production. Accept the delivery, be your own judge. if you dont like it, return it and re-order. its a bit long winded but you will get what you want which is vital when punking so much money on a laptop.

Geh... I really had a hell of a time with the customer support placing the order :/ I do not want to go through it again, Id rather just switch the screen in the future tbh.

Revoka, you WANT the 1080 screen. Don't go with anything less on the R3. It is kinda bright on displaying anything white though D:

hard task if you havent done it before and, from what i have read, still tough when you have.

Theres a few threads lurking around where people from NBF refer you to a certain Dell rep who will give you very generous discounts, depending on what country your from.

    Good luck.

Yeah, certain items are easy to self-upgrade like RAM, HD, CPU, etc. Anything that's generic and can be purchased online you can always take care of down the road. Dell/Alienware specific parts like chassis, video cards, displays, NICs, etc are much harder to swap out later if you decide you don't like them. Much better to get the config you want initially when it comes to components like this.

Guys sorry for off topic question.
If i brought the system with single 320GB HDD option.. do I need to purchase 2nd HDD caddy when I decide to add 2nd HDD?

I heard DELL send systems with 2nd caddy, even if you select single HDD.

Yes they do. There is like a 1% chance they won't send you a caddy and if that happens you just have to call them and they should send it to you for free.

major fail for not picking the 1080p screen. on a 17", 1920x1080 is REQUIRED! I wish we had the option for 1920x1200 like on my old MSI........

Would framerates in games not be significantly faster rendering on a 1600 screen? Seeing as how there are a third fewer pixels to draw compared to the 1920 screen?

I had a 1920 screen prior to it being stolen and every single game I ran needed me to run it out of the native resolution.

(wouldn't stop me if I got the 580M of course, I'm referring to an M17x with lower spec GPU)

Yeh, fps in games is far better on the 900p screen.

60 fps in games vs about 45... But you have all those frames yet the screen don't look as good.
