Because the M17x R3 is a single MXM 3.0 GPU system.

If you want xfire and those cards then your choices are M17R2 or M18. Obviously the m17 is cheaper but once you factor in the prices of upgraded cards the two are similar in price if you get the M18 on sale.

You can get an M17xR2 through the outlet, but you'll be sacrificing CPU power if you do.

Bigger screen means nothing. have you ever had a look at the 17" RGB LED the R2 is equiped with?

About CPU power, during gaming it will be hard to tell if you have a 2920xm or a 840qm.... performance wise unless it is a really cpu bound game (like some emulators, or some bad consolle port..) you wont notice the differences..

For the average user, Which is what you are. You will not notice the difference between a 940xm and a 2920xm. From our talks I know you are going to use it for Uni and gaming, the difference will be minimal for you. If you get an R2 and buy dual 6970's and an outlet R2 which run from 12-1500 + about $600 for the cards. IDK about anyone here getting an M18x for under $2000 with Dual 6990's/6970's+ an XM. (unless AAFES) Omar get an R2 and later on if you want to upgrade get the 6970's. The 5870's with an XM is still no joke and won't be for a few years , + you will be able to get 6970's/6990's + they are working on 580's. An R3 will not be able to compare to either an R2 or an M18x.
