So i've been trying to trick out the 17 r1 i got(Already came with 4930mx and 880m, would have sort of preferred the 780m but it seems to work well enough so far) and i cannot for the life of me find the 120hz LCD. The cable that everyone was saying was impossible to find took me one fifteen minute call to Dell to procure, but i've checked every reputable LCD dealer i can think of and i dont see any. Only ones offering it seem hella sketchy. Is it possible to "shuck" a 120hz m17x r4 LCD assembly and use that panel? I thought i read something about them using the same LCDs, but i also thought those were glass/LCD assemblies.
Also are there any good ways to get the 330w OEM(Or just quality+recognized in bios) AC adapter for cheaper than the hilarious price Dell wants? My 240w isnt detected in BIOS, tested it with another from an r4 some guy brought in to my work and it recognizes it, and i realize that i could just get another 240w but those are only a bit cheaper and i hear you get slightly better performance(and its probably better to not run the adapter at 100+% of its capacity if possible)
also if this shipped with the 4930mx plus the 880m i have both of the larger OEM heatsinks right?

Here you go. I've bought them before they are fine. Never had an issue. a 330w unit on ebay is tougher to find as for some reason people sell knockoff units. I have like 3 of them . It's lame. I've learned to filter units by searching for only used ones and then I buy the most reasonably priced one. Hasn't steered me wrong yet and it's how I bought my 17r1 330w psu and battery as those are the most notoriously knock off items for the ranger. your heatsinks are for the 100w gpu and there is only 1 type of heatsink for the cpu on the ranger. I recommend the all copper 5 pipe and 4 pipe heatsinks on ebay. Pricey but they will give you decent performance. -
Just based off the specs on paper, I would say it's more than fine. It beats the 17 R1 screen by 45 cd/m ^ 2 brightness, it's glossy, and it runs at 120Hz. Sounds like a damn good upgrade to me. But, I haven't bought one myself so I don't have any first hand experience with it.Last edited: Jan 13, 2019 -

780m can be overclocked easily to 880m and is on average cooler and more stable.

Yep, 880ms arent quite as good from what i hear.
Also did you get the board in for your Ranger? i see its not under the "dead ranger" spoiler tag.
Also i guess im going to have to order the one from China, i was hoping to avoid that for time and warranty purposes but thats literally the only place i've seen themRengsey R. H. Jr. likes this. -

Yeah its working now, no longer dead ranger.
I have extra assembly for 120hz but I am waiting on my gpu to test first, if it doesn't work I was going to throw it up here. -

980m is 300 USD on ebay. Everything else is not worth considering since the asking prices are so inflated on old cards.
Or you could go through taobao and buy a WX 7100 (MXM 480) for pretty cheap. I got lucky and found one on ebay for 250 USD.
If you fixate on 120hz then you can install a GTX 1070 as well for 500.NB_Neenja likes this. -

Part of me is tempted to sell the 880 and wait for 20 series MXMs to either buy or push down the 10 series MXM costs(Which probably wont happen lets be real, i still see 780ms for like 250-300) but id rather not go without a GPU in this, esp. once i get the 120hz LCD running.
also good to hear about your r1, super happy with mine so far. -

Do you guys think the 330w PSU is worth buying if im going to be upgrading the GPU and i have the 4930?

It was one of the first things I grabbed for my Ranger. Makes it so you don't really have to worry about what configuration you may run in the future.
