Wow.
I had graphics and driver issues for the first few months of owning my Alienware m17x with the Nvidia 460M. I came across a post that there is a modified Bios out there to disable the integrated intel graphics.
Once I disabled it, instantly all of my problems disappeared! I was getting 60+FPS on my favorite games at the highest level of graphics, where I was previously getting 20-25FPS.
I was able to update my driver with the modified NVAM file without blue screens.
I am SOOOO happy I did this. If you don't care much about portability (if you did why did you buy a laptop this heavy) then you are good to go!
Just google the insyde modified bios and welcome to actual gaming!

lol...congratz bro! Life with your computer will be way better now.
Optimus in theory is wonderful, but in practice, the autoswitching doesn't always work correctly -
The wierd thing is when optimus was enabled, i would even get the little nvidia icon in my sys tray that said it was using the discrete graphics.. well it was lying!!

Just remember to give +rep to the people you took the information from ;D

Optimus hasn't been that bad for me, i just wish the 460m had a bit more power
looks like ill be going ATI for a while

I had nothing but trouble with optimus. For a few games it works great, but for RUSE, DOW2 I get much better fps without it. Also RUSE would give me really weird gfx glitches.
Also the best thing I ever did! -

don't even get me started on optimus....it took me 2 replacements (for optimus and other unrelated issues) to switch co. and i must say ATI hasn't let me down...save for drivers, i really like the NV driver development teams..... and this is coming from an NVIDIA fanboy.... and since i was really pinning for portability and power i went with the 6970M...
