Okay allow me to explain:
I am using 10.11 catalyst mobility drivers from amd.com
If I simply open any video file (avi, mpg, mp4, m4v) in VLC, it will play fine until:
After putting the computer to sleep, the audio of any video file I play cuts out in what is about 7 second increments. It last for only a split second, but makes watching any video unbearable. The only solution is a reboot.
This does not happen to mp3 files. Only videos.
It could be the case that VLC is to blame, as I don't have any other media players installed on my pc. Can someone who has 10.11 installed and dual 5870's try this out and confirm/deny? Put your computer to sleep, bring it back, and then begin watching an avi or mp4 movie in VLC or another player and let me know what happens. Every 10 seconds or less, the audio should freeze up for a second.

Just an update: I downloaded and installed DivX's Player (i only installed the codecs) and the problem doesn't seem to persist there.
So does anyone have any ideas why this happens to VLC? Any possible solutions?
Thanks -
Sry dude, I dont think it is a problem with VLC. More likely a driver conflict. If I were you I would uninstall Divx, Codecs, and other third party video/audio players/driver, and reinstall them. Make sure your Codecs are up to date. I would love to know if you can get VLC working again.
I use VLC for all my movies/videos and have never hit a problem. I dont use sleep or hibernate as I have heard that may cause a few problems with the M17x R1. -

Damn... If I were you, I would let an AW tech look at it over the net.

Syncing video and audio is hard, and the system already has a hard enough time waking up from sleep. If it works in Divx then I would be happy. VLC, while awesome, does have some weaknesses.

I have heard rumors that with Nvidia cards, sleep and hibernation can cause all kinds of problems when waking up... there is a dell updated video driver for the 260m and 280m cards, you can try that... but as it is an older driver, you may run in to other problems.
My solution: I shut down, and boot up. I do not use sleep or hibernation. -
Just to update everyone...
I uninstalled and reinstalled the most recent version of vlc player... 1.15 i believe.
the problem kept happening...
so i was thinking... I never had this problem before, ever. So i decided to look for an old version of vlc. i found 1.03 and installed it, the problem is now gone.
as far as i can tell, 1.15 is causing this problem. -
Does 1.15 have some sort of DXVA/video acceleration enabled by default?
edit: it doesn't -
it could be more complex. for example, it might just be that 1.15 causes problems when waking from sleep with dual 5870's with catalyst 10.11.
whatever the case, i'd rather use an older version of vlc that i can find no problems with, than compromising a graphics driver that has been working flawlessly for me (for the first time ever between both amd and nvidia). -
Very true, and I'm glad you found a solution! I've also noticed that VLC just doesn't seem as "robust" these days. I think I'll also go back to a 1.0X version. The only reason why I update is because their FLAC codecs in the later versions seem to accept more bit-rate variance.
Still, whatever works
