Hi, i was looking to upgrade my gtx 460m to either a 6970 or a 485m. One small problem I'm having is finding where to buy either of the cards, and if i need a specific 485 or 6970 for the m17x. Is it possible that I could just go to my local computer store (who sells Asus) and see if they will sell me one of the cards above or even the gtx 580m? any feedback will be helpfull

Check the NBR Marketplace, there's a member selling them.
iDK if the ASUS ones have the same architecture and would be safe to flash a Dell vBIOS on them.

Asus doesn't make a laptop with anything but the 460m, aka you can't buy an Asus 485/580/6970 as they aren't made. Even if one was made Asus uses proprietary reverse MXM slot cards that won't work with AW's. You'll need to look for either an Alienware or Clevo/Sager card for it to work.

One problem with that idea, there's no guarantee that the 560m will work with the M17xR3, and even if it does it's basically an overclocked 460m with slightly better tessellation ability. If you're going to do an upgrade I would recommend one of four things:
1)Contact Dell and buy the 6970m or 580m from them, guaranteed to be plug and play.
    2) Contact the member BabyHemi on here and buy one from him, he should be able to get you any of the cards but they will be Clevo/Sager versions.
3)Buy one from a member on here in the marketplace.
    4)Contact RJtech.com for a 6970m

I post the link to his FS thread for the 560M so you'll know who I was talking about as he sells both the Clevo mobility 6970 and the 580M, Dane is right, there's no guarantee that the 560m will work but also a waste IMO going from a 460M to a 560M.

Doing that, your card will also be covered by Dell's warranty so you'll have nothing to worry about just in case ;)

It might need to be flashed with a Dell vBIOS.

I'm not talking about the whole laptop, just the video card(GPU).

good question. i'd like to know that too. it'd be awesome if they offered some kind of "swap out" for the 6870 to a 6970. if not i suppose one could sell the 6870 on ebay or whatnot.

though i dunno if its really worth more than 200-300$ to upgrade? i mean, really what kind of performance are you looking for? i can run Witcher 2 on medium with the stock 6870 no prob, no OC.

Your best bet is to call and ask. maybe they'll take back your mobility 6870 so you'll have to pay less and not have to sell your current card on your own.
