    Right now I have M17 64bit system with 2*1 gb ddr3 ram.

    I ordered a 4gb ddr3 online which makes my M17 has 5Gb(1gb+4gb) ram.

My question is does this 5gb configuration run in dual channel? or I should buy 2*2gb?

    Thanks~ :D

For Ram to truly run in duel channel mode,
You need 2 sticks of the same gig and speed.
Duel as in pairs need to be the same so yes 2x2=4 or 2x4=8 and your set. ;)

 is that means no matter 2X2 or 4+1, the company only runs first 2gb in dual channel?

Well you can google Duel channel ram and check but for the ram to run duel from bios it has to be the same size and speed, and it is not limited to just 2 gigs that would be only 2x1 gig sticks what would the point of duel channel for faster ram?

hard for me to understand :D , just tell me directly, if you were me, which configuration you gonna buy? 2x2 or buy one 4gb makes it 4+1=5gb

In 4+1GB, the first two GB are symmetrical, so they run in dual Channel. After that, the last 3 GB are asymetrical, so the last 3GB runs in single channel.

Called "flex mode" in Intel systems:

Desktop Boards — Single, dual, triple and flex memory modes

Buy the single 4GB stick. It won't lose any performance, and the single 4GB stick allows you to upgrade later (even to a 4GB+2GB setup!!). Only in a memory benchmark that tests the memory addresses past 2GB will notice.
