Just placed an order with AW/Dell for the new M17x R4, they gave me a great deal on my laptop that I couldnt pass up.

Just curious if I have to update any drivers( Bios/gpu etc) once I receive my laptop or if AW/Dell does it for you. It's been a good 4 years since I've owned a PC and I barely remember how to do any of that anymore.

    Thx!

    P.S.

Specs are below for those who are curious:

    2nd Generation Intel Core i7-2760QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.5GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
    8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
    17.3-inch WideFHD1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7970M
256GB Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s

I believe they try to, but it's not always the case. When I received my M18x a couple weeks ago there were newer drivers available already. I try to get every system or compontant checked by going to their respective website...Nvidia, Intel, Microsoft...

It is good to check, but generally they are newish. Since you got the 7970m they will probably be the newest drivers, since official drivers have not even gone public yet for that card.

It's all relative. Usually they image all the things over the network, so depends when in the life cycle you purchase the product.

you were living without a pc for 4 years? seriously???

what is the good deal, let others know :) it is a nice practice to give others a price point comparing what you bought, always helps hassling with the dell rep to give them other prices :)

Dell/Alienware (and all OEMs essentially) ship their systems with drivers that they have confirmed to work properly and don't break anything. There are better (usually newer) drivers in many cases--especially GPU drivers--that are not supported simply because they have not confirmed they are free from problems. As Yoda pointed out, since you are getting a 7970 GPU, it will most likely have the newest driver available.

lol.. let me rephrase, ive been using a mac the past 4 years. as far as the deal, i just haggled a bit w/ the rep and she price matched a clevo laptop and admitted she made an error in doing that, but got approval from her manager anyway. including taxes i saved close to 15% compared to the alienware online website price.
