Does Anyone Here Actually Take Their M17x With Them When They Go Places?

So I have heard the M17x described as a portable desktop, not a laptop. I know it's heavy. Really heavy. Really really heavy.

Ok, so if I got one I wouldn't exactly be taking it to the coffee shop to chat on MSN while I sip my beverage. It's too valuable to risk a spill anyway.

But what about students taking it to class? Or people taking it to their jobs? I'm not talking about doing it everyday. But does anyone here actually take their M17x with them anywhere? Is such a thing even possible if you're not a bodybuilder? Can you put it in your backpack with textbooks and power brick and take it with you to class or will doing such a thing cause you to severely regret purchasing this monster of a laptop?

    Observations and experiences please!

Dude, it's not that heavy, it's only like 12 pounds, i carry it up and down steps daily, you don't need a forklift to pick it up and move it from place to place.....

It's definably worth it since you can take it anywhere and game wherever you like.

I take it to school with me every single day in my backpack. I carry it up the stairs in school and down the stairs in school, from class to class and then sometimes if i decide to walk home I walk home with it. It's not as heavy as some people think it is.

Mine goes around with me whenever I travel, so I'm out of the house with it at least twice a week. I'm thinking about getting a new backpack for it though - I want to be able to fit a change of clothes or two in alongside it.

Honestly, I've never taken mine anywhere..but not because it's too big or too heavy. I just bought it as a desktop replacement...but one that I can take between my office and the living room.

i take mine to the coffee shop all the time.

i wouldn't recommend the Orion side bag, that gets heavy to carry around. use a backpack.

When I go on vacation I always have to take not only my m17x but also my gf's 17 inch vaio. So I stick everything inside the Orion Backpack, both laptops, chargers, also some documents, cds, mobile phones, etc... and that gets heavy!
But that means if I have to take my m17x alone somewhere else I feel like flying :)

The conclusion is: I use it as a desktop replacement and yes its heavy but its doable and worthy. Again as Necrotopsy said don't get a side bag, that was the first thing that came to my mind as well.
But the other problem you should consider is the battery. Don't know which one is 'worse' if the battery or the weight when using this machine as a laptop.

Like the Siamese twin I never had. It goes everywhere with me-gas station, Mickey D's, Walmart, Taco Bell. Church!!! OK. Maybe not. But work, trips, and whenever I need it I take it. 12-13 pounds...not too heavy. Course I'm 6-3 245 myself so.....yeah. If you are small of frame I can see weight and size being an issue.

Like Dora the Explorer says-BACKPACK, BACKPACK!!!! (Those that have kids will get this)

I travel with it every week across timezones, along with a Dell e6400 that I use for work. Sometimes I'll bring it into the office on a daily basis and other times I'll leave it in the hotel during the day. I use it not only as a gaming platform but basically as my portable media center (hotel cable TV sucks).

+1 on the backpack. I had a nice one I got from MMS one year but it fell apart from abuse and sheer weight of its contents. I replaced it with this:

Bulky? Yes. Heavy? No. I'm 135 lbs and I don't find it a problem. Hitting the gym helps ALOT.

I think the bigger issue is finding a good surface where you can work comfortably. There's a guy in my university that uses one. Get a good laptop backpack. Your shoulders and back will thank you. ;)

I take mine to school, 2nd time around going to college. I would also suggest a good backpack. (definitely get the Dora reference). I have the slappa matrix and love it.
Only issue I have is that being about 5 ft 7in and 130lbs I got pushed in the hall and started to tip backwards. My friends grabbed my hand and saved me from being a turtle on it's back.
Anyway it's not that heavy with a backpack and that includes textbooks, nzxt cryo cooler, ac adapter and my mamba mouse. Haven't braved trying to pack up the M11X and the M17X at the same time yet.

    The case is awesome
There actually not to expensive either
$140 with high density foam. That's a small price to pay to protect such an expensive machine. If you really want to get creative you can give Pelican the laptop and they can custom mold the laptop in the case instead of the pick n pluck foam. The same mold stuff the military uses for there guns

I myself take mine everywhere. I'm in the army and it goes everywhere I go. I'm in Yakima right now just chillin on a cot using PDAnet to chat with all ya'll. Yea it's heavy and adds and extra 15 some pounds to my ruck, but being able to play games out in the field and down range is well worth the added strain of having to lug it around on a long ruck.

If you carry it around for most of the working hours per day it can become extremely heavy. On my trips to China, I regularly haul my 8lb Vostro 17 with me and it gets pretty heavy after a whole day. If you use it more than you carry it then it shouldn't be a problem. I use my laptop plus other accessories as weights on my trips, it's great for exercise :)

I use a 3rd party backpack... it cost me about $85.oo and has enough room for my mouse, keyboard, well... everything!

my m17r2 has been with me on every trip, when I moved to Singapore, it even came with me on a trip to Bali, then a trip to Amsterdam, Belgium and France. I bought the AW travel bag for it, but want to move to a backpack, after walking 30mins with a 30pnd bag it gets quite heavy. I have even taken it with me while taking a dump! Those cooling fans kept the stink in the bowl very nicely!

I concur that Alienware M17x R3 is very traveler friendly. Heck I used to put a sponge mat on my chest and hold R2 vertically to browse while lying down. YUPZ m that lazy at times...

R2 is a battle tank.....R3 is a armoured personnel carrier which can transform into a "Spectre" gunship when you need it. Lol!

I took my R2 to Nursing School 5 days a week for 1.5 years. And now, I take it to work overnights every night. I carry it in a Targus Backpack designed for large laptops, paid $79 for it. I carry the lappy, powerbrick, mousepad, mouse, games in cd holder, xbox 360 controller for the rare times I use it and presently I have a 24 pack of AA batteries for my mouse (i hate rechargable batteries--i know I am wierd). Yeah, its heavy, but seriously just man up...or woman up, whatever the case.

I think it depends on what you're using to carry it. For example, I made the mistake of buying a messenger bag. I tried carrying it to class (about a mile), and so far as weight goes, it's not that bad. However, it was heavy enough for the pressure to actually rupture blood vessels in my shoulders.

If you're going to carry it around, do it with a backpack...

I carry it to work everyday to do the boring stuff and then at night at home I use it to keep myself amused and then twice of three times a year it goes overseas with me. It is not that big a deal so long as you have a decent backpack. I actually worked my way up to buying an M17 R2. First I had a lightweight 15", then a performance 15" (heavier of course), followed by a mid range 17" and finally the R2.

I can see that going straight from a 15" to a heavy 17" could be daunting but as I said earlier I carry it everyday to work and back and I don't look a thing like Arnie the Terminator maybe a bit more like Homer Simpson. :) and I am not that young either.
