Hi Every one,
Just wonder if any one has 900P on their m17x-R3. Is it good or bad?
Because I want to buy M17X-R3 for my wife, she doesn't care about 1080P or 900P. Currently she is using 4 yrs old sony F which has 16" 900P screen. I choose the base model with 2630 QM ,GTX 460M and 900P sceen with 4 yrs warranty for her but just wonder if I need to upgrade the screen to 1080P for her since I got myself M18X with 2720QM+1080P+6970CF.
If I add $150 to upgrade the screen to 1080P, the total price I paid will be only $200 less if I choose m18X with 2630QM+6970CF without extended warranty or will be the same amount without 6970CF and warranty. It looks like M18X is a better deal but it's heavy for her.....It's hard to decide! Any suggestion is welcome~
Thank you in advance!

If your wife wants to watch blu rays the 1080p screen will give her the full viewing pleasure. I would suggest that you get her something else if she's not the gamer type.

I kinda agree with widezu69.
If she isn't planning to take full advantage of the GPU (and playing blu-ray's certainly doesn't count), then an alienware is bigtime overkill.
But to answer your question, I'd get her the m17x with the upgraded display if for nothing other than smaller size and lighter weight. Just based on experience with my gf -
I was considering going with the 900p display until recently; I asked the knowledgeable folks on this board about the differences between the displays, and it turns out the 1080p display is both brighter and displays a wider range of the color gamut than the 900p display.
I personally don't care about the higher resolution, but the brightness and color fidelity is important to me. If those factors are important to your wife as well I'd recommend the 1080p display, otherwise the 900p display is probably great. -

See, my wife just watches shows/movies on her laptop and does the basic downloading tunes and checking email and running over finances and stuff. No gameing at all except maybe some stuff with the kiddos.
She started out with a $35o 17" gateway notebook and it was perfect for her and ran really great with Vista premium on it. It was put through the ringer too with kids and her clumsy rear dropping it out of bed because she fell asleep with it in her lap over and over. It was awesome. It got struck by lightning so we got her another one.
We got a cheap Walmart eMachine for $250 and it's just as good and takes just as much of a beating and even it still has the 1080p sceen. The point is, if she's not gameing or doing some sort of heavy workload applications stuff... dude, I wouldn't even get her an Alienware.
If she is into gameing and will be gaming on it... get her the 1080p. In my opinion, an AW without a 1080p screen is just... well, I don't know why they offer it. I mean no disrespect, to each their own - I'm sure they sell 900p screens... I just strongly recomend a 1080p for her or if she's just doing the basic stuff... save yourself like 2k and just get her a system from Walmart. Seriously those gateways and emachines are tough laptops and they run rather well for the basic everyday stuff. AND walmart has a really good warranty program you can get pretty cheap that's ALOT easier to deal with than Dell.
Good luck either way! -
Looks like he's already ordered the machine based on his sig, but yea i'd say just go with the 1080p, considering you're getting your wife an alienware (which means money isn't that much of an issue), might as well get her a good screen to go with it.

Yeap, the XPS is a great choice if you don't need bleeding edge graphics power.
-
Nice choice. The screen is one of the best places to invest imo. That system should have very good battery life and be a good bit quieter than an r3 too.
-
That's a very good choice. Did you also consider the XPS 15? It has an awesome screen and it's lighter than the 17 (of course).

Very good choice. I think your XPS will be a bit more durable too. Not to bag on the AW's... but they're just so crammed and danty in my opinion. Again, a good choice for you and a good choice for her.
Does anyone choose 900P instead of 1080P on their M17x-R3?
