I have just bought two refurbed M17x's. One has crossfire 4870 and the other has 1GB 5870 single. Not that I am hurting in the graphics department now, but since I have the time and money (for now anyway), I was hoping to buy two cf 5870's with heatsinks. If anyone knows where they can be found please shout out.

    Thanks in Advance

You can directly buy from Dell. I'm not sure exactly how much. The best way is to call and find out. Might get lucky. :)

    P.S.
What are your specs and how much'd they cost? I've been looking at the outlet for days for a good deal.

The dell HD5870m's use the heatsinks from the HD4870m.

Only dell purchased HD5870m's will boot up in the M17x's. There is a bios whitelist that will block your system from posting if it sees a non dell graphics card in the primary slot. Not an issue with the slave slot.

Dell purchased HD5870m's come with the heatsinks attached.

Also, if you are trying to purchase this, you will want to know the exact part numbers in advance so there is no confusion when you talk to the sales folks.

The master card is made for the left side of the machine, the slave for the right. You cannot swap them from one side to the other.
There is a fan underneath each card, also designed for either the left or the right. They cannot be swapped side to side either.
The fan and heatsink for the left side (master) is the same on the 5870 and the 4870.
The fan and heatsink for the right side (slave) is the same on the 5870 and 4870.
I am not sure if the crossfire cable differs from 4870 to 5870 systems (it probably is the same).

With all that in mind, buy the parts you actually need. You will probably not need to buy fans or heatsinks for the machine with xfire 4870's. But I don't think you can buy the cards from Dell without the heatsinks.

Relevant part numbers and general prices:

    $54 - F603N - Left Fan
    $54 - F605N - Right Fan
    $??? - C8245 - 5870, primary (goes on left side)
    $334 - RV546 - 5870, secondary with cable (goes on right side)

The cards seem to be difficult to obtain right now. I have been trying to buy them to upgrade my single 4870 to crossfire 5870 for a week now, and haven't even been able to place the order yet (issue with warehouse confirming availability and price I am told). I also have not been given a price on the C8345 part yet, I would assume it is less than the RV546.

Easirok, RV546 does not include the heatsink and fan?

RV546 should have the heatsink (it comes pre-attached I believe), but not the fan. The fan is a separate piece that sits underneath the cards.

The part numbers came from the Alienware parts sales rep, confirmed by Brian. The RV546 part number was also confirmed from others as it appears on the original dossier for machines shipped with 5870 cards. The prices were from the Alienware parts guy, but they are not "firm" prices as he will not commit to the price until the warehouse confirms actual availability.

EDIT: I guess it would also be helpful to share the Dell/Alienware contact information, to save a little bit of hunting time:

You can speak to any salesperson there, I don't think it matters who you get.
They are open from 8 to 7 CST, Mon - Fri.

I managed to dig up some of the same information from dell parts live chat.

RV546 is the upgrade from single to crossfire.

However, I was told that it does indeed come with heatsink and fan and crossfire cable.

I have yet to confirm with an alienware sales rep though.

I actually got a quote that I can use to check out and buy it, but haven't yet cause I wasn't sure if these reps knew what they were talking about, regarding what is included and if it would even ship.

    Card,Graphics,Hard Drive,5870,Parker,Mobile Pci Express Module,Cable (RV546) $334.99

Yes, that part includes the heatsink and crossfire cable, but I am quite certain it does not include the fan. If you have a single 5870 already then you would need to buy both RV546 and F605N.

The price you quoted is accurate, I simply rounded it to $334 above to keep things simple.

I had a CPU fan replacement done and they sent the tech all 3 fans. He had no use for them so i have both GPU fans laying around at home right now.
