I am looking to buy the Logitech X-540 5.1 Speaker System for my Alienware m17x-r2.

Logitech 5.1 Surround Speaker System (X-540) - Future Shop

was wondering if the computer actually supported the speaker system or would I have to buy an additional part to make it work? and how do I install them?

    Thanks for your help!

Yes it does support 5.1 Surround sound speakers.

It should just be plug and play however you could configure it once you play around with the settings.

    Cheers.

for some reason I just can't get surround sound, are there actually three speaker pots on the Alienware m17x-r2? because I can never seem to get the sound coming out of all the speakers is there something I need to do?

Only one output to the laptop. Rest should be connected to each other. Perhaps you should read the manual on your speakers.

but I thought the Alienware had 3 audio/headphone ports? I was told that I was able to plug in all three plugs, and strangely when I go to windows configure in my sound settings and test the sound settings, I can hear the surround sound.

I think 3 are for ear phone pieces. It's totally irrelevant matter with your speakers I think.

I've had altec lancing speakers for years for my laptop. 2 speakers and 1 sub. They connect to each other, and requires only 1 output from the laptop.

hmm I was pretty sure you plug all 3 in for a 5.1 speaker system, I just couldn't figure out how to get the sound from all the speakers

I can turn on "matrix mode" on the logitech speakers and all speakers have sound, but its not as effective as just plugging in the cable for the rear woofers

An Update, I actually had the speakers working once, after continusly configuring speaker fill on and off and loudness equation on and off, but I foolishly unplugged it
