Anyone try a 4k screen through DP with the m17x R4 with 7970m? I am thinking of getting the dell 28 in 4k screen sometime before summer if it gets good reviews and if it works and nothing else beats it. Still want a plasma/OLED but hey when that becomes affordable or i become rich that can come to be right? ^^
I am really looking foreword to total war and RCT3 among other things with that 4k screen so i am interested if it'll work and if it is worth while or i am still stuck waiting. I also heard the new ultrasharps have hardware LUTs that are accessible![]()
Anyone got any ideas? I personally would prefer 4k at the 32 inch size but for less than half the cost i can not argueAgain down the road when i can afford to get exactly what i want right ^^
UPDATE: Confirmed.
According to AMD tech page 7970m supports MST through DP so you can run 4k screen at 60hz700 dollar 4k screen baby!

Well, 7970m does not support this resolution, max is 2560 x 1600
4K resolution is 3840x2160
I think your best bet is to get Dell Ultra Super Hiper Mega Sharp Display with 2560x1600 resolution. It will cost a fortune though -

so it says but that doesn't mean they were lazy when they made the documentation...best screen out was 2560x1600 at the time. It has everything it needs DP and such. Are the drivers just not updated or is it lazy documentation on AMD.

On a related topic, you guys think the 680m can handle a 4k display?

Might be restrained by the intel HD graphics though. -

well all i want to play on 4k is RTSs so it will be fine for those games. I run into more CPU problems than GPU problems in games.
-
Gonna be a tough go for both the cpu and gpu. People are having a tough time getting to 4k resolutions with a single Titan or 780ti, so even with 7970's or 6/780s in sli/crossfire, you'll still have to turn settings down.

talking about RCT3 and butt old RTS games....i find that hard to believe. Anyways it would be temp until i upgrade my desktop
-
My bad. I thought you meant the newer total war games (shogun, etc). The Dell monitors are very nice, but very expensive. I've been looking at the displays from monoprice for sub 4k but over HD

I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten foot pole as it is limited to 30hz@4k. I'd personally wait for 4k to mature as the current stuff you can buy now really isn't optimal and over priced. Wait a year or so and 4k will be a lot more mature as well as cheaper.

that is HDMI -_- DP is 60 silly...it has a DP port
IPS ish screen (IGZO) 28 in 4k with DP for 700? over priced? That is way way way cheaper than the 2560x1600 screen and higher res plus hardware LUT are accessible! -

Look at the specs man
lol....he is just brainlessly going off the spec sheet....it labels it TN even though it is IGZO. Also the spec sheet says 30....probably because they based that off of HDMI. So he hasn't ACTUALLY tested it. he just read a spec sheet that is most likely wrong. I don't see any reason why DP would not run at 60 hz.
Dell UP3214Q Review
this one runs at 60hz so no reason it wouldn't run at 60hz. I am surprised forbes would just read off a spec sheet without thinking.
I'll go to bestbuy this weekend and test my R4 on a 4k screen and see if it works on DP.

Forbes a newb for not double checking with logic
EDIT: BTW what is worse with gaming is not 30 FPS...it is damn ghosting :/ I hate the blurry mess on total war but i want a 4k screen. When plasma 4k and OLED 4k come out with flicker support i'll buy a real 4k screen for serious gaming. Google/youtube the video of 120hz strobe....it is better than nothing but still not the same as plasma/OLED with strobe. I can't wait for one of those screens plus with strobe...without strobe those screens still ghost but no where near as bad. The ghosting on the S4 i tried was only marginally better than SLCD or whatever on an HTC phone :/ It needs strobe/blinking soooooo bad. I got an old CRT that i cna only run in summer with windows open with a P100 filter mask on...it burns off some horrible smells and gives me migraines...probably not safe to breath. I can't wait for summer to turn it back on for games. I really wanted the ZR2400 or whatever that thing was. The 24 in 2560x1600 CRT but i blew my one chance :/
this....Sony FW900 Epic...just impossible to get. That would be awesome until plasma/OLED TVs come out :/ At least i have a 1900 something 4:3 -

Why not just get one of those ultra-wide 21:9 monitors, they are a lot more mature than the 4K monitors and are like running 3 monitors with the extra screen space. It would be an awesome setup for the RTS games that you plan on playing. Plus, you can get them will low input lag (which is ideal for gaming) and have a way better refresh rate than these 4K monitors.
The AOC 29-inch IPS Q2963PM is an excellent monitor, and is only $379 on Newegg. Here is a list of all the 21:9 monitors available on the site: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ... 600414455&IsNodeId=1&Order=PRICE&Pagesize=20
Coming from personal experience, I have used one of these monitors at a friends house and that wide display really gets you immersed in the game. I am going to be buying one for myself really soon.bigtonyman likes this. -

EDIT: BTW not trying to be a jerk just loathe that format with a passion. Firm pusher of 16:10 and 4:3ish screens.
so the real question is does the 7970m support "multi-stream technology" for DP
EDIT:well with some further searching i did find on their tech page 7970m supports MST so yes the M17x R4 7970m should work just fine with any 4k screen with DPDell 28 in 4k screen here i come...spring breakish....if i have the spare dough.
EDIT: BTW add homeworld to that list of games at 4k i shall playHomeworld HD comes out in the near future

well dell changed the site again now it doesn't state it can do 60 hertz and many places are now saying it is TN as well and the IGZO part on the 28.5 in is missing so i am still just going to take a back seat (can't buy it yet anyways) and wait for an actual review and someone to actually confirm the specs. It is seeming more and more it is actually a TN even though their spec page has stated both -_- So if it is TN i am not going to bother unless i am really dying to get one :/ i have seen a few TNs that are fairly comparable to IPS but that is rare. Looks like this is further reason to not bother getting a new desktop either lol. might just not spend any of my money on computers at this rate :/ What a shame
At that rate i might as well just get a refresh seiki panel mid 2014 :/ -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
its definitely a TN or it wouldn't be $700.
-
HopelesslyFaithful Notebook Virtuoso
never know...i rather just wait and see what happens when they figure out what the hell the specs are...it has changed at least 3 times in a week. Plus it could be VA...seiki has those TVs for less so it wouldn't be unreasonable
Does the m17x R4 7970m support "multi-stream technology" for DP???
