    Mine doesn't.

I'm trying to use my Thermaltake BlacX with my laptop.

Anyone else having issues with esata and Windows 8?

USB 2.0 works fine thru same port.

If you're looking for fast-usb (3.0) then it wont support it. The R4 chipset supports up to 6 sataIII/USB 3.0 ports. With the two USB ports on either side and the two drive bays it's all used up. That is why the msata port is only sataII.

    Thanks everyone!

I guess I'll have to troubleshoot what's wrong with mine.

Did you get this resolved? My eSata does not work on my Dell M6700 under win 8. Intel RST notes unknown port and the device is not seen in device manager. The drive is seen in the bios setup when hitting F2.

The eSata works in Win 7.

Are you using the native Windows 8 chipset drivers, the latest from Dell/Alienware or the latest from Intel? What version of RST? Maybe one of those is a clue.

I installed the IRST from Dell site that is 11.6. I think the chipset is from windows 8 and dell did not have any to use.

Maybe see if Intel has a newer chipset driver package. That might help. I hope so.

Double-check the BIOS settings to be sure nothing mysteriously got turned off. You can also try clearing the CMOS (pull the coin cell battery, and then do a power drain operation) to see if that might help. After doing so you will need to reset any of your custom BIOS settings (if you had any).

I tried the intel automatically find drivers tool and for the chipset, it lists it as an unknown device under chipset. not sure what chipset drivers to use from intel.

I checked the bios and the eSata is enabled and the bios sees the drive. Just not win 8.

Windows 8 seems to have some strange behavior sometimes. Look in the Windows Disk Management Utility and see if the drive is listed there without any drive letter assigned to it. It's odd that the BIOS sees it and Windows 8 does not. If you know what chipset your machine has, just download the latest from Intel and install it. The Intel detection utility has not been very reliable for me. Intel driver chipset packages generally cover an entire family of chipsets in a single package, so you probably will not need to find a unique package for just one chipset.

thanks. It is not listed in the disk management utility. Look slike have the same chipset as what is posted in the picture except for the last item in the box I have a QM77 Express Chipset.

    thanks,

I had to re-install my entire OS to troubleshoot this. Redoing my system DID NOT FIX IT. Funny thing is that the BlacX Esata thing would not work in ANY USB port or ESATA port.

    Then, I found this:

    [Solved] Blacx docking station-esata drivers - drivers - windows-7

Kinda sucks to have to reboot but I don't know any way around it if you're running Intel RAID. I assume you must be running in RAID mode instead of AHCI.

    Saving a copy here:

I had the same problem after upgrading from win 7 to win 8. The esata port did not work. If an eSata cable was connected my computer also did not boot up. A clean win 8 install did the trick! Everything is working flawlessly now.

I seem to have a similar, if not the same issue.
I never tested out my eSATA port when I had my laptop in windows 7, but it does not seem to work in windows 8 right now.

I've got this "Icybox" device which allows me to plug in a hard drive into it and give it power and then I can connect either an USB or SATA cable to it in order to connect it to the computer. I'm trying to store a load of my games on it and I wanted to use the SATA to eSATA cable for speed (the USB connection is only USB 2.0 - which is tooo slow).

I looked it up and people are saying I need to configure the bios settings to AHCI? Currently my SATA setting are in RAID, but only because I also have an internal mSATA drive which requires RAID. Do the mSATA and eSATA get in the way of each-other?

Is there an easy way to make the eSATA port work?

My laptop is Alienware m17xr4 running windows 8 pro.

It is broken with the intel driver on an M6700 (that is what I have). For me, a work around is to use the microsoft AHCI driver instead.

If you require the bios to be set to RAID instead of AHCI then this might not work for you.

Are you using RAID? If you are not using RAID then I believe the mSATA should work with it set to AHCI.

    Others may know better though.

It should work fine in Raid mode. This would have to be the case as the systems are defaulted to that mode anyways. I run with the drive config in my signature and my eSATA continues to work.

I'm using Intel RST 11.6.0.1030 available from the Dell website and eSATA works fine for me so I'm not sure where you got that from.

Intel RST Screenshot in Windows 8
    Screenshot at 2013-08-20 07 07 30.png

Going top to bottom on the right side
The 2 drives are on ports 1 and 2 respectively to create a RAID 0 array. The next array shows an mSATA card on port 3 accelerating the RAID 0 above it (hence the array inside an array bit). Below that is my SSD boot drive sitting on port 0. Last but not least is my eSATA enabled bluray drive on port 4.

Works fine in RAID mode for me also. I don't use AHCI mode. My eSATA port works perfectly under both Windows 7 and Windows 8 on my dual-boot setup. I installed Windows 8 from scratch rather than upgrade.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is possible the device you are connecting doesn't support hotplug for some reason. I had trouble getting an eSATA/USB drive dock from picking up in the system and it turned out it wouldn't hotplug with my system so I had to have it connected and a drive inserted at boot for it to pickup at all over that method. The unit does USB as well and that works fine on hotplug so I don't know what the issue is. The system hotplugs my eSATA Bluray drive fine.
