I had been problems lately with the m17x r2 alienware.
I was unable to set crossfire, and both touchpad and touchpanel ribbons got broken.
I called dell and the offerered to extend guaranty till 2015 for 160 dollars.
I fixed myself both ribbons by cutting them and make them funcional again, they are obviously fixed.
    Would that avoid guaranty?

Only with respect to the repaired ribbon cables and any component(s) damaged as a direct result of an improper repair (probably be tough to prove, even should such damage occur).
