I was having a bit of a higher temp issue after updating to A09 Bios for M17X R4, so I downgraded to A09, and now I get better temperatures in the 66C~69C ranger, was having temps push up to 78C on the A012 bios.
I hope alienware does one last update for the m17X R4 to fix the temp issue.in A012.

This is most likely because of a more aggressive fan profile on A09. You could try to separate the BIOS and EC updates, and apply the A012 w/ A09 EC... But I wouldn't recommend it.

Is there any reason you'd like or need to be on anything higher than A09? Or is it just to be the most up to date?

I agree. I'm gonna stay on A09 as I see no reason to update.

Just to be on the other side, I have no issues with my R4 running the A12 BIOS, fan tables seem slightly more relaxed at lower end but maximum temperatures remain the same for me.

So A12 lets things heat up a bit more before running the CPU fan? I actually might interested in that. But when the fan comes on does it make it run louder?

Not hotter really if under load, but for light loads of around <25% cpu usage it just doesnt make the fan go as fast as normal, temperatures stay below 80°C though under 100% load. Good for stopping the fans going a bit crazy when running youtube and skype, i used to get slightly annoyed with the fan noise, but it seems better now.

All this subjective since I don't notice temps go too crazy anyways. Will run slightly hotter under light loads but it will still put maximum fans when at the upper range.
