Alienware m17x R3
GPU : ATI 6900M Series
RAM : 16GB
PROCESSOR : IE7 2.2ghz
SSD : 128 GB
Usually if i dont play high end games ie.
Battle Field 3
Witcher 2
Resident Evil Racoon City
My frames is usually stable up to 100 fps or more,
but if i do play this titles on my Alienware
about 20min on gaming all games are in High or either Ultra Settings
it drops frames from 60 fps to 10 - 15 fps only![]()
Its a one year old laptop and this problem just happened a month or so.
What seems to be the problem ?
I would like to hear some solution Thanks !![]()

Hmm. Have you updated your ATI drivers recently?
-
Yes i think i did made an update

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Probably heat resulting from accummulated dust, dirt and hair. Remove the bottom panel and clean the fans, vents and radiators with compressed air. If that doesn't cure the problem, repaste the GPU. http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/561599-m17x-r3-cpu-gpu-re-pasting-guide-w-pics.html.

I don't like using compressed air, it can sometimes blow dust into the system, rather than blow it out. A small vacuum and a small brush is what I use, use the brush to loosen the dust bunnies and the vacuum just sucks them out of harms way.

Can anyone recommend me a software that monitors heat
for GPU ?
and what is the standard Heat for a gaming state that didn't cause this kind of problem ?
If its heat issue and the cleaning was done what is the appropriate vent or a cooling pad u guys prefer ?
Right now im thinking of purchasing the Cooler Master Strike Force - 19.
Any Comments ? -
This is what I use on a M17xR3 with 580m, 2670CPU, 8GB Ram and 2 HDs.
Software: HWINFO64 (assuming 64bit OS)
Cooler: 2 rubber door stops under the back edge of the LT, one at each corner.
Max temp of GPU under Furmark 65-66c after 10 mins.
My ambient is about 19-21c
I would say that any temp >80c for a GPU should be investigated to determine if it is dust bound.
If you are not lifting the back edge of your LT then raising it should drop the temps by 5c+ -
I see,
so cleaning it by dust might give a effect ?
si its entirely dust problem not software ? -
Well i saw the fan rpm and its in 30% is it by default ?
So what i did now is adjust it to mere 70% and be doing some 3d bench mark
or playing the game till it shows dropped frames again.
by making it 70% for the fan will it be good ? to make it stable ? -
Possibly. But you should still clean out the vents. That would be step one. Step 2 would be rolling back the driver to the previous version just to see if the new one is causing the issue. Step three would be to repaste the GPU.
As for the cooling pad...Cooler Master Strike Force - 19? Pretty fancy, you'll have to let us know how it well it cools. For gaming loads, the GPU should sit between 70C-79C. If it starts going above 85C, there may be a cooling issue (dirty/clogged heatsink, needs a repaste, etc.). The GPU fans are by default at 30%. Raising them to 70% may or may not solve the problem. Follow what Revelator said and clean the dust out ya vents. -
Well from where i am its hard to get a hold of the CM Strike Force
But when i did adjust the fan rpm from 4000 settings by default and increased it to 5525 it didn't show any lag at all... im running sf vs tekken
cpu vs cpu and watched it for 30 min and none of the dropping frames showed up.
Instead of getting my CM Strike Force i got a cooler master U2 Cooling Pad
and ill be upgrading those fans in a much more bigger fan with faster rpm.
About the repasting the GPU i dont want to risk it openning by myself rather
ill be checking some company that does that for me.
but for now its very clear that its the heat issue that is caused by dust.
Drop FPS Drastically. m17x R3
