From BatBoy's sticky in the main AW forum

This comes up quite often - many new members will post asking which drivers to install, what the latest drivers are, where to download, etc. Unfortunately, maintaining a thread of current drivers is quite a bit of work. As an alternative, these links will take you to the Dell Support page for each specific model. The most current drivers can be accessed right there. When in doubt, use the NBR forum search function to locate information on a specific item.

So my first question has to be - how can I be certain EXACTLY which M17x (R1 or R2) do I own?

caveat - I am in NO WAY disappointed in my purchase .. it is an awesome machine. I just want some basic clarification.

System specs are M17x in black case with Core 2 Quad Q9000 2.00 ghz cpus and one nVidia 9400 GPU and one nVidia 260 GPU (per HWInfo report.)

Do you need more info to determine the R- level ? what do you need?

Second - it was listed as 1920 resolution capable. So far, with my current drivers and configuration, the Win7 Control Panel and nVidia Control Panel show a max resolution of 1440.

How can I determine if I have the higher res screen?
Will the new nVidia drivers allow me to get the higher res?
HWInfo does show both cards running and moderate (and Fluctuating) temps for both cards.

You have an r1 since the r2 is for i7 processors. I think the best way to see what your actual screen resolution is capable of is going to the DELL website and put you service tag into the support area and see what your original configuration documentation states for your screen, the 260 should have no issue obtaining this resolution.

    Thanks !!

ok - from the listing for my service tag, the only monitor info I see is:

1 K002R Module, Liquid Crystal Display, 17.0 Wide Extended Graphics Array Plus, Alienware, M17X

does this limit me to 1440 or is 1920 possible ?

(interesting reading thru the installed list for my service tag !!)

That would mean 1440x900 is the max resolution. You have WXGA+. For 1920x1200 it would have to be WUXGA.
