Does the FRAPS program slow your framerates at all being a background program while Gaming???
Got a steady 30+ FPS on Crysis, High settings and 1600x900p res
Got about the same with Red Faction Guerilla, All settings maxed, res at 720p
Updated the driver wondering if FRAPS slows the gaming down?

FRAPS will always take a hit on the overall performance, but to different degrees on different hardware.
Since you said you're getting ~30FPS in games without FRAPS on, 30FPS is already considered borderline "playable", and not entirely "smooth"; meaning that you'll probably experience some stuttering here and there. Ideally, you want all your games to run at 60FPS and above so that everything runs buttery smooth 100% of the time. So if you were to run FRAPS right now, your frames will probably drop to the 20's, which will definitely be noticeable.
So on faster systems (desktops) that can run games at 100+FPS, running FRAPS in the background will possibly bring the FPS down to maybe 70-80. But it's still above 60FPS, so the decrease in FPS won't be noticeable on those systems. Though, for the 6970M on the R3, many games run at below 60FPS, so any extra burden (like FRAPS) will make gameplay less smooth. -

Since the regular monitor on the R3 is 60Hz, anything above 60fps is not necessary and not going to look any better because the monitor cannot refresh that fast. I would say anything near 40-60fps is perfect.

can someone please explain what natice resolution means? im kinda confused
-
Native resolution is the resolution of your screen. So full-HD display is 1920x1080 natively.

FRAPS does not impede on performance unless you are recording. If you are simply displaying Frame rates then it has no impact on gaming performance especially with the hardware you are running.
-
FWIW, I get 35-50 fps on "high" at 1440x900 with my 460M. -
Ok thanks. I've noticed it doesnt change when I'm just using the Frame Rate. The 6970 isn't as great as I thought it would be. I should have waited for the M18x. Oh well
-
The 6970 should give you great performance... as long as you are somewhat reasonable with your expectations. What FPS were you expecting with Crysis? -
It's alot better than what I'm use to on Xbox 360, and I do like it. I just thought it would get me more on 1080p. I just want to beable to play any game on the market and max out the settings at 1080p. Thats why I said I should have waited for the M18x, then I could have had dual 6970.
Don't think I'm knocking the 6970 cuz I'm def not.
On Crysis at 1080p, on High settings, vsync turned on and AA at 2x I get 27-40fps. It drops below 30 sometimes when explosions in a wide open area is being viewed. I use vsync because I get the image tearing when moving around. I use vsync on alot of games. Red Faction Guerilla is another one, though the game looks alot better on the R3 with the 6970 than it did on X360.
I get alot higher frame rate when i turn vsync off but I have been getting the tearing effect alot on games. Not sure if thats normal or my settings are off in CCC. -
BTW I'm running on the i7 2630QM until they come to swap it out for the 2820. This is my replacement R3 and they made it with the wrong processor, so I should be getting a home tech come this week to swap it out for the i7 2820QM.
Anyhow, not sure if that is making a difference or not in my frame rate issue. Please advise if thats the case. -
CPU probably wont equate to much if any difference in game performance.
Having Vsync is killing your performance to some degree but try enabling Triple Buffering in the ATI control panel since you keep it enabled..
Also maybe try some different drivers to see if you can run your games without Vsync on and get less tearing. Some are worse then others with tearing but then again some people are just more sensitive to tearing then others .
6970m should tear up Crysis on just high Settings not very high ..
Red Faction maxxed out will tank even high end desktops when you have Ambient Occlusion enabled and a couple other things so you may want to disable a few bells and whistle .. Bought the game day one and it was a mess even on my desktop with 2x5870s at the time.. Best thing you can do for Red faction is force it to run in DX9 mode which will take away a few of the DX10 features but the game will run 1000 times smoother..
Either way good luck . -
I'll tell you one thing I love is the tessalation!!! That makes a great difference in detail. noticed it the most when I did the Heaven Benchmark, which I dont get great results on but it is, what it is.
Still love the R3, no doubt about that!!
FRAPS and gaming...on R3 6970m
