That is a fantastic deal!!Your R3 is better than most people's R3 here and they payed alot more than you. The sweet thing is that if you have any issue the warranty will cover replacement parts. Make sure you give the OP rep for hooking you up!!!

Someone just told me that the CPU i got for my R3 is a total waste of money because its not going to make a difference in gaming....... as long as i have a good GPU. is that true?

It's not true. Will it be a dramatic difference? Maybe not but it will run faster. I look at it this way. Some cars are offered with sport exhausts and options that up the power slightly. Many people prefer the fastest spec out of the box even though that 5 or so hp won't make much of a difference. Line the car without the optional performance and sure enough given an equal driver it will lose.

Bragging rights ? Sure is. Also 1600 MHz XMp profile ability. And for that price you can't go wrong.

Thats not bad but didn't you at least check the for sale forums here? I was going to buy an i720, sli gtx285s with 19x12 rgb screen for less than that shipped. Imo you paid out the nose for an sata2 ssd and 8gb ram both of which can be upgraded for cheaper yourself.

No, I didn't check here because I don't know that much about PCs, just looked at similar features on a new build and thought that was a relatively good deal.

It is kinda depressing how everyone here treats me like a complete retard for not knowing PCs in and out. I had a similar response on a different thread, in which I politely asked "was this a good deal, and any suggestions for software i should download or upgrades I should consider. I simply got the "well mine is this, which is better, and you should have purchased this instead."

    Le sigh.

This reminds me why I've gamed on consoles for awhile, hardware headaches are the worst....

Edit- I wasn't saying you were particularly negative, just seems everyone has a low n00b tolerance.

I see the positive of it. I just feel like that kid in "The Sandlot", he knows of baseball, wants to play baseball, but doesn't necessarily know anything.

Difference is I didn't hit an awesome PC into Darth Vader's backyard, which was supposedly the home of mega ultra dog, I bought an underwhelming(apparently) configuration.

But yea, any suggestions that could help - such as what I should look to upgrading first, or what I can actually upgrade, would be awesome.

"you should have bought this" unfortunately rarely helps any owner.

    Cheers.

I'm sure all these guys started out the same lol you got a really nice system. The SSD card you added probably brought up the price a lot! Do some more research for $1400 you can get a much better system minus the SSD.that is an upgrade that you can do at a later date for cheaper.
I actually cancelled my initial order of this morning... The customer service reps where very understanding.

I was just trying to point out that certain components are cheaper to add later on down the line. Adding a second card is $$. So is swapping the CPU and the display panel.

I'm not much more experienced than you and to help you out I suggest you cancel that order. The forums are here to help and there's tons of info on here on what configs people suggest.

I didn't know squat about alienwares in December. I ordered a new r2 with ssd blu ray dual 5870s and all the little stuff except CPU and paid $3500 cdn after taxes. Then I came in the forum and learned about r3 around the corner etc and learned alot about how to deal with Dell . I returned that one and even the next r3.

I know it's a bit to ask, but would you mind checking out the outlet site and possibly suggesting a specific one, I want to try and cancel tomorrow and switch, my max price is 1599 before coupon.

    Thanks in advance.

You can definitely cancel, i did that just this morning.
if you want an R2 I would suggest getting something that has at least these 3: (everything else can be upgraded later)

Processor Intel Core i7 740QM Quad Core Processor, 1.73GHz (2.93GHz Turbo Mode, 6M Cache)
Crossfire 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5870
17 inch UltraSharp WUXGA (1920x1200) RGB LED Display (Its what the R2 is notorious for)

Hey man, thanks for helping me get that R3.

G73JH owner here, just bought the R3 about 20 mins ago with devildoc's help. Not really a big fan of Alienware (I much prefer Asus' design and reliability + pricing), but I could NOT pass up this absolute steal of a deal.

The total was $1179 after discount, and with crappy CA tax + free shipping the total was $1282. The specs are the same as above, but it has a 1080p 17.3" display, same as my G73, which is nice. Basically I spent about $700 less than retail price because of the 4 GB of RAM, 2620QM and basic DVD-RW drive along with 320GB HDD... and only the 4 GB of RAM needs to be upgraded, everything else doesn't matter since I have tons of laptop HDD's and an SSD already.

I'll be putting my 90 GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD into it and my 640 GB Samsung Spinpoint 7200 RPM drive + getting 8 GB of RAM for it. Big upgrade over my 720qm + Radeon 5870m in the G73. This is the 3rd gaming laptop I've bought in a month and a half.
