I'm running Fable III at about 90-150 fps at peak, but it frequently drops to 50-60 fps when I'm looking around.
I'm currently using the 11.5b Hotfix drivers with CAP 5 and I have shadows off, view distance set to Very Low, Terrain Detail set to Very Low as well but the others are on max. (1920x1200 res, no Vsync)
It's playable but the lag is very annoying, and when I enable shadows, I get around 25-30 fps. Massive drop in performance.
Is the game just poorly optimized or am I missing something here? i7 740 with crossfirex hd5870 should be able to handle fable III fairly well right?

Your biggest performance gains will be from disabling or turning down the AA and shadow settings. The reason your fps are very high until you look around is because your computer must render all of the stuff that wasn't in your view to begin with. If your computer won't run a given game at 60fps with all of the settings turned up fully, you know you've got to do some tweaking. I personally think that shadows make games look more realistic than AA does, so I always try disabling or turning down the AA before anything else.

I tried tuning everything down to the bare minimum, and the fps shoots up to about 220 but when I look into the distance, I still get around 50-60 fps and the game starts to stutter again.
I'm not sure if it's related but ever since I installed the 11.5 drivers, WoW isn't running smoothly, it shows 60 fps but it feels very choppy. The only workaround so far is to enable windowed mode. -
Silly question, but did you update your CAP profiles?
11.5 CAP5 is out now here

I have CAP5 but when I checked the control panel, there are 2 more application profiles. Do multiple application profiles overlap and cause problems?
Hmm. I'm going to uninstall them all and just install CAP5 and see what happens.
