    Hello guys,

I just recently got my m17x (i5 520m, CF5870, 4gb RAM) and I bought Fallout 3 through Steam as I've never played it before and thought it'd be nice to play it on the new machine. I've had nothing but problems since trying to play it. Most times I'll randomly freeze without warning. Initially, the video was VERY choppy and it appeared as different parts of the screen were "updating" faster than others, it was like "ghosting" but in one quadrant of the screen at a time.

I'm playing with Crossfire enabled, stealth mode off, power settings on high performance. Is this a(nother) widespread issue with the m17x, or is it just me?

    Thanks for the tips guys,
    Ishakir

    Ishakir,

I have Fallout 3 installed through Steam and it plays flawlessly on my machine. I experienced the problems that you're speaking of on my Xbox 360 but that was because the laser in the machine was cracked and displayed fragments of the game as I played (since then I got a replacement 360). Fallout 3 in general is a really choppy game and may freeze at times as I experienced this on my 360 but so far on my R2 the game plays flawlessly. The only thing(s) that I can suggest is to update the game through Steam and see if that works, also at the start menu click on the data setup and check all of the boxes if you dl'd the game of the year edition, otherwise you might have to reinstall the game through Steam.
Honestly, I would just reinstall the game just to be safe.

    Hope that this helps?

    Thank you for the reply,

I seemed to have come up with the solution, I'll post it here in case anyone else runs into it. I did the following, taken from another forum:

i ahd nothing but issues with fallout 3. i bought the game of the year edition, i tried probably 10-15 different fixes from a varying degree of sources. seems like a great game but NO game is worth the headache that is involved with making this game playable. ill just wait fr the new game to come out. good luck getting it to work i devoted 6 days to it and no luck.

I cant really called fallout3 "fallout" because it really isnt.

Its more like "fps set in a pseudo fallout universe" to be more accurate.

Still fun though... but its not fallout.

it is not built for quad cores, it's a simple fix, ishakir posted it already. that will stop it from happened most teh time, but it still messes up for me everyone once in awhile. but compared to every 5 mins, i would say its fixed.

i tired this too,it doesn't work , i don't even run a quad core and it crashes once every 3-7 minutes. i found some thing called final fix, but it worked until i was out of the vault as soon as i hit the open world, it started crashing. it was fun to kill that girls dad though. well worth the $29.99 there IMo. i tried several re-installs as well all of them having the same issue. i think its just hit or miss. ive read oter places where a few people haven't had any issues with it even if they didn't run any of the patches.

crash in fallout 3 are randdom i tryed several fix and got my fallout 3 to be stable how ever the fixes made quiting fallout 3 a pain like the window don,t close and stick there in front so watch what the fix you do have as effect as many of them permamod your save files and they won't be able to be loaded with a clean install

basicly fallout 3 will always have some crashes bug or W/E even the ps3 version is unstable so it's not a hardware problem

one of the trick i found at the beginign is that the m17 loads fallout 3 so fast that even if the game keep crashing you can be back in it almost where you where in the following seconds and the m17X is probably even faster

Never had a single crash with Fallout 3 on my R1, and I played it allot. Only issue I had was the DPC latency problem causing the radio to crackle allot. Haven't played it since the DPC problem was fixed.

And no, I don't consider Fallout 3 a successor to Fallout. Sadly, though Bethesda make great games, they don't know how to build attachment, investment and character building into the play mechanics. Wasn't any instance I felt emotionally involved in the game. Didn't have the same involvement they had in the previous Fallout's where your choices actually effected things. i.e. shotgun wedding, sleeping with the gang leaders daughter etc... Also the humour was very stilted (almost clinical) in Fallout 3, none of the exploding Brama, Area 51, The Cafe of Broken Dreams etc...

Fallout 3's a good game, just not a real Fallout successor.

Edit: Oh yeah, how'd I forget, King Arthur's Knights and the Vorpal Rabbit.

    Greetings Fellow Fallout Players,
Most of the freezing issues reported are resolved with the newest patch of the game. It was discovered that even after updating the game through steam (assuming you purchased that version), it didn't bring it to the newest patch. I would strongly suggest downloading and installing the patch from the Fallout 3 website.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

I have a R1 and Fallout 3, updated to the newest drivers, blah blah. The game still crashes a lot on me. Sudden crashes, game freezes.....

I finally resolved most of the problems by downloading a program called "smart close". The program closes off most of other programs that run in the background. Now the game still freezes and other stuff but now I can go much longer until freezes. I like the game, really nice to play.

I just got goty too and I am having random freezing as well. I have the i5 450 and the GTS 360m.

I can exit the game by bring up the task manager and ending the program. They just freeze up the game about a few minutes after I load the save.

I do have my game connected to LIVE, does that affect it?

it shouldn't i dont think mine is either. did you try the multi core fix? i5 is a quad isnt it? even though i did that, it still freezes every now and then, but not as often. seems to freeze when i exit too.

It's a dual core processor. I tried launching from the fallout3.exe and from the falloutlancher and it still freezes.
I've tried turning off AA, I think that gave me longer play without freezing. It still froze.

Weird though, it doesn't ask for the disk if I launch from the exe, but it does for the falloutlauncher.

Btw, I just saw that this thread is in the M17x forum. I don't have that computer. :p They should be all the same running the game wise.
