So I just finally received my M17x (i7-620, CF4870's) and I have to say I’m well chuffed, it looks the part and so far plays everything I’ve thrown at without a hitch, buttery smooth using the stock drivers.. everything is almost perfect except for the fan noise.. I mean, holy the thing sounds like it’s about to take off when playing games, now I play with headphones on the dining room table but the G/F whose in the living room (open plan btw) can hear the bloody thing over the tv!? is there anything can be done about the noise levels? can I slow those badboys down & buy a laptop cooler? anything? as it really is an unacceptable noise level tbf

you have a 240watt gaming machine in the space of a slim line dvd player.

Not really sure how you would manage that without high noise?

Either way, check out the cooling mod in my sig. Fixes most of the noise, but requires tinkering.

This is normal and is totally acceptable. Would you expect a lambo to be whisper quiet at full throttle? as ash said his mod will help you with your temps which will decrease the fan speed and frequency of the fans kicking on. Other than that I suggest ear plugs. :p

i fully understand why its loud, theres a load of hot components in a small wee space, just wasnt expecting it to be quite so loud, so everything is working as normal then, would that cooling mod invalidate my warranty?

My wife's Studio 15 makes more fan noise than my M17x does, and that's only for cooling the CPU (she never does anything to stress the GPU). The M17x isn't exactly quiet, but I wouldn't call it loud either. And better to be a bit noisy than to overheat.

The noise doesn't bother me at all. It's quieter than the two desktops that we have in the livingroom and the fans that are constantly on. No one in my household has ever said anything negative about it. Now if you want to hear fan noise, try the last desktop 4870 my son had in his desktop. It was so bad that I had to replace the card with the 5770. Of course, he loves the new card and we love the silence.

Well, yes and no if you keep all of your old parts I.e thermal pads and replace them if the time comes for a repair than no but the actual mod itself does unfortunately, and in all fairness I must not that it has mixed results. For you since you have the 4870's this mod will not help as much. You will achieve better results with just using aftermarket thermal pads,(you shouldn't change your thermal pads untill atleast 6 months) and changing the thermal paste on the gpu withTX-3, as5, ...etc I use Tx3 and have beautiful temps never gets above 70'c.

Once you get used to it, it doenst sound that loud. when i first got my system, it's as loud as an aircraft taking off/blow dryer next to your ear. it's really that annoyingly loud. but after close to a month of noise barging my ears, i dont really feel it nowadays. it's really quite acceptable now. and if you do a thermal compound change for 2 gpu and cpu like i did recently, it's almost like the system is too quite and i got worried because it doesnt sound "normal" now. haha..

Each review of this laptop says it has annoyingly loud fan noise under full load, so it should not be a surprise... it is indeed loud while gaming.
Can we expect anything different? I don't think so, and I don't find it so annoying after all.

It doesn't bother me really because my previous HP HDX 9250 was as loud as that M17x while playing.
The main point is that this laptop is fairly quiet when idle, a way that it is not bothering to keep it running / downloading during the night not far from the bed.

Plus I don't know what kind of TV you have, but my GF can perfectly watch TV while I'm playing BFBC2 or Crysis intensivly not more than 3m from her ;)

My Area51 m17X wasn't loud enough and burned itself into oblivion. I would much rather have the noise than not. Get a Hepa air cleaner for your room. It serves two purposes.
1- Provides a good comparison for noise and you barely notice the M17X running
2- Cleans the air and that means less dust for you to breathe and less dust for your M17X to breathe. Everybody wins.
Proz - sounds like those huddling around the table are just jealous. Seriously they don't use earphones/buds/whatever?
People this thing is not that loud and Ash's mod is a great way to decrease it if you have tinkering capabilities.
Another thought, you can get a laptop cooler to help keep the temps even lower, and thus decreasing the amount of time they run at high rpms.
    Cheers

Maybe it's the high noise that keeps it cool, did you try to setup some loudspeakers behind the laptop and put the volume up big time? Should work best with some Techno ;)
