I'm guessing this must be a driver issue of some kind.

I have a new Alienware MX17 (with specs below) almost the first thing I did with it was to install Steam and decided to give Fra Cry 3 a blast. Downloaded and installed and it ran ok, if a little slow at times and with occasional crashes. Then after about a week, today I started up and opened Far Cry 3 and it is so slow it is impossible to play. Settings are still set to optimal.

There was a Windows update - but that was after the game was running slow. I allowed the update because I thought maybe it would help speed things up but no luck there.

    Any ideas?

    Alienware MX17
    Intel core i7-3630QM
    8GB Ram
    Windows 8 64 bit
    Geforce GTX 675M

Also try other games and check the GPU/CPU temperatures with HWinfo.

Laptop is not new. It is most likely a Refurb R4, buying a refurb can be deadly if you don't buy it directly from Dell.....and do you have any warranty bro ?

Not a refurb. It was old stock at John Lewis. Their one and only attempt to sell Alienware at their store and no one wanted it. Some 6 months old I believe but not a refurb, anyway..

    OK

    first

go to controll panel and uninstall ALL nvidia drivers

    then restart the laptop

    Then download and install this

    http://www.nvidia.com/content/Drive...-international-whql.exe&lang=us&type=geforcem

    Then install this

    http://www.hwinfo.com/files/hw32_432.exe

    Run in Sensor Only

Then scroll down a bit and take a screenshot so i can see the temperatures of GeForce card and CPU, and post it here

See that is why i wanted teamviewer - i would teach you quickly :)

Here i have to make 500 posts in order to help :)

Go to Control Panel and pick add/remove programs, locate all NVidia software and Uninstall it one by one

If you do it the way you want you will not uninstall the driver itself...

Sorry, man - I don't have Teamviewer anyway. But thanks for your help -

I uninstalled all the Nvidia stuff as you suggested. A few restarts but ready for the next step...

you may want to double check your power plan settings. i had witched to power saver when on battery and forgot to switch it back to high performance and had a very similar issue. switched it back to high performance and all was resolved.

Here's a tutorial from our support site to perform a clean driver re installation, uninstall the video drivers as explained in the article and install this one.

EDIT ADD: Check if your games are running with the Nvidia card, this article explains how.
