Whats the fastest someone ever had their R3 built whether first ordered or as a replacement? Like from time of order to time it was mailed or delivered?

Mine was not a replacement but it did take several times to order. DELL sales rep suck it took 2 different sales to make my order then when I saw that AAFES had a sale I canceled the DELL order which dell told me there was not even a order placed even though it said it was ordered in my dell account. Dell sales rep are terrible. Thank goodness for AAFES..

    First laptop:
    Ordered July 12th
FedEx recieved shipping information on the 19th.
    Delivered on the 26th.

    New Laptop:
    Ordered August 16th
FedEx Recieved Shipping information on the 19th

So build time, around 3 days.
According to FedEx I should recieve it on the 24th, then again, it took them 3 days to pick it up last time.

I wonder how some of you have such very short duration between ordered and shipped out.

I wonder if this is the case of them sending a pre ordered/ pre built system.

Are are there chances whereby Dell recirculates cancelled orders that are already built or even those returned immediately without opening or those that are in mint condition despite being returned.

How do we know for certain? Is there a surefire way of detecting exactly when the system was indeed manufactured apart from online tracking and the stickers on the box or the dates of warranty?

i wouldnt be suprised if dell just send out returned laptops that where either barely touched or not opened.

a fair bit of orders are fairly simular bar the ram and hdd maybe, wich are the easiest to swap out i reckon.

why sell a returned laptop for cheap in the outlet when u can get somebody to pay full price for it :p

exactly, Dell would lose too much money. I myself had to change my order the day after i placed it but it still had to ship the unit to me so that i can return it. Why can't Dell just stop the unit from shipping?? Are they that stupid that it needs to be delivered first? For every order that Dell gets, half of them has one return. Where do these returned items go? It gets recirculated as new.

So don't get too happy if you got your item fast, it was probably a return unit. remember, brand new units are manufactured and coming from China and that takes a long time

If they allow changes after the order was placed things can go wrong with specs and you will end up with specs you did not order. The systems would even be more expensive since they have to hire people who monitor all changes from people who did not do their homework very well.

Return items are checked I guess and sold as new or else the outlet would be flooded.

Yes that is true, all units come from China. But from what I have heard from Escalation Specialists in Malaysia and India etc, is that this recycling happens commonly in North America.

In Asia they customers simply just dont accept anything with the slightest hint of usage etc.

I think you could check those large white stickers on the box which actually state the time and date the system came into the country from the manufacturing HUB. All manufacturing dates will be mentioned explicitly on these prints. ( Unless Dell does indeed tamper with the information which would make a gross violation of business ethics ).

Dell does not send returned laptops to the factory. They have already paid the taxes etc, so it would be immensely costly and time consuming to ship it back to the factory of production. The site of production is also entirely different from the location of R&D. Once they ship it to a country it remains there. Also remember they are flying these machines around the world. Not shipping! They cannibalize thosse that are no usable for good parts which are used for part warranty replacement. Obviously used ones are sent to refurbished business outlets. But those boxes that are not opened are indeed kept and pushed to those whose order are in exact order. They would be probably be placed as top priority to be delivered to a suitable customer. I do think they would open those boxes and alter components to match the order. That would indeed be a costly affair as the box has to be changed once its opened. and the whole monitoring system would go haywire.

But remember we are talking about first time reorder and not those who are getting replacements. North American users are known to notoriously receive " Whole Unit Replacements " which are not brand new. In Malaysia and India where I have first hand experience, the replacement system when is subjected to a fresh order and passed through " Whole New Unit Replacement". Infact after the Dell Team has to get approval from unit's Finance Team as they will have to absorb the cost in manufacturing a new unit.

The reason for Dell to practise this in Northern America is perhaps based upon the high number of returns including high number customers abusing the privilege to return. We know this truth by following this forum posts itself.

It is for the same reason Complete Cover Warranty has been withdrawn from Australia too. They found high number of customers faking and abusing the warranty.

Yes, I agree, but does Dell have to go through the whole process of actually shipping it out to the customer? Waste of shipping costs

My system was a replacement for a failed XPSM1730. Replaced w/ M17xR3. Order went in on 8/05/11 shipped from Nashville,Tn on 8/09/2011 arrived in Atl,Ga to my business on 8/11/2011. Order went in late Friday 8/05 so I'm sure they didn't even start until Mon. Shipped Brand New System not refurb. I had however been sent a refurb XPS17-702x which I was not happy with as I'm sure most of you wouldn't be either. However a HUGE THANKS to this website & twitter I was able to get a full system replacement.

Patience, Persistance, & even more Patience!

You got a return (that is in new condition). Highly unlikely Dell is able to build the unit in 3 days. Remember, all the new units are manufactured and assembled first, then shipped from China to TN.

My order is being built right this moment. I just got a call on this matter. The estimated delivery thus far as stated online tracking is 12/9/2011 or 9/12/2011 as those of you in the states may be familiar with.

My spec is as mentioned in my sig.

Yes I'm sure my system was just one they had on the shelf already. Then loaded the software on it & shipped. Because it was a replacement system I was never even given the opportunity to upgrade BD-ROM or Video card. It also took 6 wks daily on the phone for hours at a time along w/ constantly answering e-mails. It was very frustrating. But in the end I got a nice brand new system.

tbh aslong its working properly and undamaged n stuff i dont mind if its a returned unit although i wouldnt mind gettin some money back ;p

the fact it gets shipped from china n stuff does make it a tad annoying regarding the time it takes from ordering and actualy gettin the thing in your hands.

After all if u buy shiney stuff u want it in your hands asap ;p

Gamers in most cases lack patience :p

I was told by the escalations supervisor who handled my case that normally it takes 15-30 days to receive your Alienware system but right now the turn around time from the time gets into production is 3-5 days. i'm guessing due to slow economy Alienware is slow.

I posted this in the other thread, but my m17 (ordered on and entered production on the 8th) just shipped today (from Hawthorne, CA) at 4pm pacific time. So it looks like they will beat the EDD by 1 day as it was originally due the 21st (with next day shipping)

Sorry to hear your build looks delayed, Stampy... I bet if you call them they'll give you next day delivery for free. I didn't even complain, I just asked the status and they refunded the money i'd already spent on NBD.

well you didnt had to complain until the 20th cause technically the computer could still make it on time which is the case for you. But in my case i can start the complaining cause they will not make it on time now, that much is clear and still will keep telling me that it will.... xD and with my current shipping method i will most likely NOT get it until monday the 26th...
But i think ill just call again tomorow and see iff they can upgrade the shipping method instead of complaining and see if that gets things moving.

Hmm.. very annoying, my tracking number still doesn't work. I have also received the email invoice from Dell.

After reading around it seems that even UK orders come from China and have a trip around the world before ending up in the UK. Why would the packing slip have the Limerick (Ireland) address on it then? Looks like I am going to have to wait for ages.
Unlike you people from the US, we don't even have an option for NBD delivery. I asked for it over the phone and they were puzzled...

    EDIT
Tracking number has started working now... UPS don't even have the parcel in their hands at the moment.

I wish i had ups... at least they know how to locate my place. But they chose fed ex instead... They find us once every blue moon, and when they dont (which is 90% of the cases for the first try), they dont even try to reach me to get directions. They just update on the internet failed to locate destination... i m just hoping they ll find me they are supposed to deliver today!

UPS track has got my parcel now, its in Koeln, Germany but this is what has come up:

    Exception

Your shipment is currently within the UPS network; however an unforeseen event has occured which could result in a change to the scheduled delivery date. View Shipment Progress for details.

    And the Shipment Progress states:

This shipment is warehoused until it is released by Clearing Agency

Dell sent me an email an hour ago saying it should arrive 22nd Sep 2011, but with this 'exception' will that date change?

call them up and find out without yelling. Cause usually if you dont let them (them being anything such as dell, fed ex ups, geek squad etc...) know you're watching they would likely take there time to solve.
From what you re telling us though i wouldnt think that this is normal.

I just refreshed the page, its changed (again, within the space of an hour)

Its gone from China --> Germany --> Shanghai
    It says 'In Transit' now

But no estimated delivery date on the UPS website, apart from the 22nd which is what Dell gave me.
