I am about to file an RMA request on my M17x R3. I've reset the bios, clean installed windows, and installed the original dell drivers for the 6970m. Hibernate still DOES NOT work. Sleep occasionally will not work. Any more suggestions? This is my college laptop and sleep/hibernate is kind of a must. If it makes any difference, I have a Seagate momentus XT hybrid solid state drive. Memtest gives 100% pass on all RAM.
EDIT
I did some more googling, seems that sleep/hibernate issues are quite common with the Momentus XT. Any other hybrid driver users able to comment?

it's probably the xt that's making the problem. try changing your hard drive.

There's a long issue of sleep/hibernate issues with Windows 7, it's not a hardware issue. Alienware isn't really going to fix it as it is an OS issue.

How come my alienware is the only one with this issue? I have 3 other laptops running Windows 7, none of them exhibit this behavior. But again, all of those 3 have 4gb ram and a mechanical hard drive.

Your momentus XT have the latest dell firmware?
DEM4 I think it is -

Are you using an OEM image or Windows 7 or an Alienware image? Certain manufacturer's use a specific image of Windows 7 that always has sleep/hibernate issues, mostly HP/Compaq.

I installed a fresh copy of windows 7 ultimate X64

I am using a ssd and have similar problems. I tried Microsoft fixit and that worked for 2 resumes. I did a complete reinstallation and ms fixit worked for 1 resume. Now, it doesn't work anymore so I gave up.
Also, it once worked after I updated graphics driver for the 460m graphics card.

I agree its a Windows 7 problem. i have has this issue on and off since i got my system.
Windows 8 CP which i have on duel boot is ok. instant on from hibernate works every time with no problems.
Even when i played with xp hibernate was working ok.
Final attempt at fixing sleep/hibernate
