I just got a notification that my m17 r3 is in final production. Now what I'm wondering is I'm looking at putting in 8gb of ram and a SSD or hybrid SSD into my m17x r3 what does cretins suggest and what are the first things I should do when I get it ?

    The specs are
    Intel 2720
    Amd 6970
    1080p non 3d screen
    4gb of ram
    320gb hard drive.

8Gb of ram is perfect ( more if you do some emulation),
you mean Hybrid HDD like MomentusXT, I got one..(with an SSD F120) but don't see any difference with the HDD 7200rpm.. It,s more usefull putting a SSD ;) but if you want one for booting OS, u can get some BSOD. Just keep you HDD and put on second place a SSD ( or try for system boot..).

Here's a guide that I wrote up that I'm doing:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/576373-guide-my-new-m17xr3.html

Here's another one that someone put up:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/576885-couple-basic-alienware-questions.html

For the RAM, the most popular pick is Kingston HyperX 1600mhz. For SSD, Intel 510, OCZ Vertex 3, and Crucial M4 are at the top of the list. The OCZ is the fastest but can be very finicky to install. Also, OCZ has had reliability issues in the past and doesn't have Intel's reputation for quality and reliability. I haven't heard much feedback about Crucial's except it isn't as fast as the other two.

    Hope this helps.
