Unlike in R3 when you plug in the optical sound adapter or Toslink the sound will not be automatically streamed via the optical output. There jack option etc will not pop up automatically. No such option is present in the Soundblaster Recon Software either.

You will have to manually change the output device manually by going to the sound management Present in Control Panel. You got to choose Digital Output.

Only then will the soundcard stop streaming sound through the notebook's speakers.

Note: If you own an R3 and on the verge of receiving the R4 as replacement, avoid returning the Toslink adapter. They have stopped shipping it with the present generation.
