Hi all, my Alienware 17 built April 2014 came with Windows 8.1. For some reason the window's 10 reserve icon that's supposed to come up on the right tray isn't appearing..

Any ideas? Or are we Alienware users not entitled to it?
P.s all updates up to date.

Guessing here but my AW also does not have the free upgrade reservation but the Eurocom does. Maybe Dell requested that the automatic free upgrade is not offered? It will invalidate warranty and might cause them no end of support calls and rollback time?

I'm sure you can manually register on the MS site, I haven't checked yet....

You need to have updates KB3035583 & KB2976978 installed in order for that notification to appear on your machine

Me neither. The executables have been downloaded (GWX and GWXUX.exe) but do nothing. This is on an AW Windows installation. I thought it might be multiple devices on the same network but I have seen posts with people having multiple devices registered so that's not the problem. Oh well not a biggie, it looks like all it offers is automatic download upon release. I'm sure there will be a manual method, probably using the windows vaildation feature to authorize...

Haha, like that's going to happen on day one! Wait out win 10.1 or win 10 SP1 if you want a near stable OS with gaming.

MS will be tweaking and tuning for ages and every time it causes timing (TDR) problems for graphic cards .

Same rule applies. NV hadn't fixed all the TDR's that started when they updated the HAL for win 8. Take a look at MS's first fix : https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/jj676805(v=vs.85).aspx All this does is reduce the severity of the problem allowing the OS to continue running. Partial reset?? Really? Your game still bombs but now there is no critical event logged.

Win 7 only took a few months to get fixed up since Vista took about a year and 7 is only Vista tweaked. It's all about the OS denying software (driver) direct access to the hardware. Forces the game to line-up in the interrupt table and slows things down. The driver authors try to come up with tricks to get through the HAL quicker but it's a moving goalpost when MS update :(.

Staying on an older version is no guarantee of escape since MS update the HAL on earlier versions to make compatibility and upgrade easier.

Interesting times, MS seem to be betting the farm on this one, even clamping down on partners to not bad-mouth them (as the NDA clearly states)

LOL. More of a 'highly unlikely' but I live in hope. If MS are really interested in helping it may happen quickly. I think the first week of the auto-download will be factor in deciding how much resources are allocated to this, and gamers are only a small group in the big scheme of things. Getting as many people across to win 10, even to the point of giving it away, is their priority right now.

Win 7 and 8 drivers written to MS spec and API calls should work just fine. There may be some fine tuning but they will want to wait until it stabilizes before expending energy. I expect to just see win 10 added to the list of operating systems eventually.
