Well, laptop is a PC, so it offers a lot more functionality than a console, even if it's just simple tasks like office documents creation. You can also program, create Web content, create music, graphics, videos etc. From a gamer's perspective just make sure to install Steam and Origin (online platforms for purchasing and downloading digital copies of games) and you're good to go. Games on PC are usually much cheaper than their console equivalents, however some titles are exclusives, so you won't be able to play them. Alienware 17 is a great machine, it has beautiful screen and it will allow you to tweak your system a lot (if you are into this kind of thing).

There is a whole section of the NBR Forum dedicated to Alienware laptops:
Alienware Forums, Alienware Laptop Forum and Discussion

Just be aware, you WILL get addicted to NBR... ;)

Lol. This reminds me of myself when I was new to pc gaming. (As in sees someone using Alienware in University, <-- buys it.)

Honestly I feel like this is why half their stuff sells because people who don't know anything flock to buy from them. =/ Well if you have money to toss about its a good quality build product. I've had my Alienware M14x 3 years running now and no problems other than touchpad not working anymore, and one of the 3 USB ports is pooped.

However if the purchase hurt your bank account you could of bought an Asus for the same specs anywhere from minimum $200-1000+ cheaper depending on your configuration.

A base 17 will stomp new gen consoles.

Download steam and origin for your games. Wait till they have sales to buy games and you can get things super cheap.

    You made the right choice.
I'm pretty sure you've heard of the whole PC Master Race movement. So far if you're looking for something that you can have for over 10 years and still be caught up with the current gen. PC is the way to go. You already have a base AW17 - upgrading it to match what ever comes will be a breeze and I'm sure that a full spec'd AW 17 will beat even the "next-next" gen consoles. **Disclaimer: Wasserman prefers playing most of his games on a handheld (Mostly because the only Good Monster Hunter game you can get for PC comes with a subscription and It's IP locked)**

To add my 2 cents to the topic, one of few things you gotta remember is... we are a community and there sure as hell is a reason for it :D
we all have bugs/glitches/troubles we encounter with our machines and we help each other out. Sometimes even as simple as by just telling to go and google stuff - which is exactly what I'm gonna do. Whatever happens - google is your BFF!
    welcome to the mafia

Steam and origin allow you to download games right to hard drive so you can game anywhere (you must have a wall plug to play many games though)

I put a 256gb ssd into mine along with three 1tb hdds for all my games, music, movies.

I have about 90 games, 180,000 mp3s, a bunch of bluray rips and still have 1tb of free space.

You can actually fit 7tb of solid state hard drives into the alienware 17, but its very expensive ($6000)

seven 1tb msata ssds, 3 dual msata to 2.5 hdd converters and you get three 2tb raid ssds, and a single 1tb boot drive :)

Don't look back you mad an awesome choice no regrets! I know I've been dreaming of this day regardless of what everyone else says !

I just joined the ranks of PC gaming a few weeks ago with my A17. This thing blows consoles out of the water and makes me wonder why I didn't switch sooner. You'll be very happy my friend.

The short answer is yes. The games will be downloaded onto your hard drive and once they have been installed and started once, while online (for authentication purposes) they can they be played without you having to be online.

Best of luck with your new purchase.

download steam and origin definetly.. Steam is the best to get cheap games however sometimes look on amazon etc.. Don't buy games like BF4 directly from origin its bloody expensive.. Best to buy from amazon on that.. There are few free games on origin like BF3 (definetly get it) and Deadspace..

I've had my AW17 for around half a year now, it's truly one beast of a laptop. I also own a PS3, but ever since I got a gaming computer, my consoles have just been collecting dust. Playing on PC is just so much better, the only time I use my consoles is to only to play GTA V, but I got bored of that one kinda fast. As for PC, the community is just so much better. It's full of pretty mature gamers (But not mature towords Alienware :p), but the AW17 has made me very satisfied it's been quite useful too. I'm glad that you are wanting to hop on the Alienware train, you won't be disappointed.

In my opinion, you shouldn't buy one of these laptops if you only want if for gaming. Consoles are cheaper and much more reliable. Sooner or later, parts will fail due to planned obsolescence, you'll see spares are very expensive, sometimes difficult to find, and nobody guarantees that fixes will solve the problem.

I'd suggest a laptop only if you plan to use it as a platform for other things in addition to gaming, such as working, photo edition, design...etc. But only for gaming, definitely not.

I also have a macbook pro for all my photo editing and spreadsheets etc.... I have been a console user for years now and i just want to make the jump to the "ultimate gaming experience" i am keen on learning more about pc maintenance and look forward to parts going wrong so i can get experience changing and fixing parts myself.... To me its a whole different platform and also a project, i really cant wait for the whole experience, but thanks for your opinion.

Good approach because... you WILL hit issues. Once you get used to how things go, it really isn't all that bad. I rarely buy games for console when I can also get it on PC, although it happens sometimes (only game I can think of is the Batman series...)
